project Schwin Suburban.
Yea so when i walk to school i take this trail through the woods and all. And this odd family who lives near the trail has like 3 delivery trucks that are broken down. And im always just looking around there property and all when im walking. And a few trips ago i noticed they at they had a road bike laying between the trucks. so i walk around there yard to get a better view..(sort of risky. these people are like real odd. they have like 5 dogs and they are always barking.. Then you hear the owner like "shut the ****up dog, etc... white trash.. But any way i dont feel like getting caught by these rednecks when im snooping around there yard.. so these pics werent easy to get,blah blah blah). so i walk up, and see a schwin logo on the front of the frame. and then it says surburban on the bottom tube.. looks like a semi old vintage bike. but my question is.. I want to have this bike to work on this bike, and i know these people dont give a shiznit about it.. Should i steal iT??? and probably get away. Or should i confront these not so nice people and ask if i can have it..??
Also has anyone else seen this bike before? Is it anygood? Im looking to convert it into a single speed bike that would be easy to ride and good for local things. store.food.friends house. riding around,etc. As of now this bike does have gears, but im posting it in here because i know you guys would care about this more than the roadies. plus im looking to convert it.. Whaat? Stealing is a bad idea any time, but when there's a real danger of getting shot at and/or getting a vicious dog loosed on you? I hereby nominate you for a Darwin award.

These 70s Schwinns were electro-forged, which is not really brazing. The actual point where the tubes connect is not at the joint, as it would be with a frame built with lugs or brazing. But yes, it is smooth.
Forget the ethics...this bike is heavy as hell with crappy proprietary Schwinn parts. Don't waste your time. |
Be brave, go ahead and ask, what could it hurt? Maintained, it could be a bomb-proof beater. But if it's as neglected as it appears, getting it into rideable shape could get pretty expensive. Needs tires at the very least.
Oh, and have a friend video the request/response from a safe distance. Could be entertaining for us, and maybe useful as evidence at the murder trial. :) |

Don't waste your time. I've got a collegiate in my basement that was going to get the same treatment. Once I got into looking for new spokes and tires (odd sized, only 1-2 tires available). I decided it wasn't worth the effort. to even try to re-dish the rear wheel for a BMX freewheel.

K-Mart has those tires usually, $8.96 each. Copper wool will remove the rust from the wheels / bars / headset. A little wax on the paint and you're golden! Er..green!

The tubing is electro-forged which means its heavy. For serious though dont do it its a waste of time.

any schwinn with the one piece cranks are a headache...nothing is reg. size.. certain bolts you have to get from schwinn collectors..spendy...nice color though |
yeah, some schwinns are beautiful and creamy. some are crappy. this probably isn't worth your time. parts they don't make anymore (though far from impossible to find) and man, ones like that weigh a metric assload.

That bike has gears?
Internal 3-speed or what? I don't see anything. And yeah, +100 on waste of time. I restored a nice old Schwinn Breeze but kept it as a cruiser. As a fixed "road bike," that thing is a waste. |
It's one of those nasty 5-speeds with the big chrome dork disk and stem shifter.

some of later taiwanese ones still said chicago...but that and old catalogs and serial numbers will tell you a lot. it's all online, too. but a few things... electroforging = bad. oval headbage on a schwinn = bad doesn't say "chicago" = probably bad weighs a ton = bad ashtabula cranks = bad for starters. it's a shame, i guess, that it's hard to just find a really great old schwinn lying around, as most people with nice schwinns seem to know so. ah, finding one of those old chrome schwinn paramount track bikes at a garage sale for 15 bucks would be glorious....but i don't think it'll happen. |

I happen to have a giant soft spot for electro-forged Schwinns. If the paint is good, I really think you should get it, and shine up the chrome with a little steel wool. AND make it a fixed gear.
BUT I think you shouldn't sacrifice that cruiser look. Keep the cruiser bars, chain guard, dorky seat, fenders and rack. Just replace the back hub (so you can keep matching wheels). You'll have the heaviest, cutest fixie ever. Maybe toss some toe clips on there. |

There was one in the garage on the farm where I grew up. When I was 15, I pumped up the tires, dusted it off, and rode it around the trails for a few months. That thing was heavy as ****. But it is a smooth ride.

Total junk. I don't care how bad you want to get into fixed gear, let that rig sit. There are 23487 better candidates for conversion in garages and basemens within 20 miles of where you are, guaranteed.

Anyway, my parents have one of those. It's heavy and it's junk. |
