Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

i have a campy record headset and it is rediculously smooth. it's made more of a difference in how my bike handles than i expected - an upgrade from an fsa caged bearing.

[threadjack]
i've never had the chance to ride a chris king, and i'm wondering if it would be as quick & smooth
[/threadjack]

y'all might want to take him up on his offer.

depends on the Campy model for stack height. Different era Campy are not the same. at least on the major changes in the HS dept.

king headsets are extremely smooth. They are a little bit tighter (due to the sealed bearings) than record and others at first, but they loosen up after some amount of riding.

i used to be really set on getting a king, because you can set it and forget it . however, repacking isn't that much of a hassle. i enjoy working on my bike. quality loose ball hubs, headsets and bb's can last quite a while, and it's well worth investing the time to maintain and properly adjust them. i find it rewarding that i am partially responsible for how nice my bike rides. not only that, but if there's a problem, i like having the ability to fix it.

This is true. I like old cup and cone BBs for this resaon too. The king I bought basically because it was on sale, I needed a headset, and had wanted to try a king for a while. It's definitely great at what it does, but next time I'll probably spring for something loose ball.
