i need to stop riding downtown with this guy.

i started a new job a week or two ago at a place around the corner from a friend's house. he leaves for work shortly after i leave from work, then we ride around downtown for a bit. maybe 2 or three times a week. maybe more.

every time we do this, sometime happens with his bike. 3 flats in 1 week, 2 cases of his cog slipping, the nipple from a (previously) broken spoke coming loose and bouncing around in his rim the whole ride. or just getting lost from each other in traffic for the afternoon.

yesterday--his crank broke. pedaling down the street, on an empty block, and i hear this weird scraping noise coming from his bike, and see one foot hanging like he was coasting. confused, i looked and saw his foot was attached to the pedal and the broken half of the crank was dragging on the ground.

i think, for his sake, we have to stop this madness. did it again today with new cranks on his bike and what do you know...the cog slips. damn.

or you could show him how to tighten his cog and lockring, and make sure he has air in his tires.

Metieval 05-09-06 05:23 PM

time for a new bike!!!

ka12na 05-09-06 05:24 PM

Vouch! LOL

humancongereel 05-09-06 05:26 PM

i actually don't know how to tighten a cog and lockring. i mean, without over-tightening. i've never had to do it, so i've never had to learn. his roommate keeps tightening it for him, but...i guess it isn't working.

i just thought it funny that all this **** happens not when he's riding home from work, or when doing errands, but when he's riding with me. i'm a curse...

mattface 05-09-06 05:28 PM

methinks the guy's roomate is a lousy mechanic. He needs to learn to work on his bike or pay someone who knows how.

I should stop being a snarky bastard though, this is just asking for a flat.

Serendipper 05-09-06 05:32 PM

This story needs a Hitchcock/Shalamayan/Sterlingesque twist at the end...

Like the guy is really you, or something.

humancongereel 05-09-06 05:36 PM

yeah, i agree that he should just take it to a shop. seems he'd rather not wake up early to go to a shop.

twist ending? his bike likes mine, so much that when our bikes are near, his ASPLODE!

Serendipper 05-09-06 05:42 PM

F**K Yeah! That's whatI'mtalkin' bout!

humancongereel 05-09-06 07:21 PM

i ****ing feel your pain. I get off a 12 hour workday tonite, get home and lo and behold UPS has dropped off my new shorty stem for my dirt jump/ freeride hardtail. So of course, I get all excited and install the bastard then decide that I just HAVE to go test it out. I get outside, throw down a couple manuals and then go for a monster bunny hop over a recycling container. Yeah, my ****ing chain breaks and gets sucked into the rear wheel. Next thing I know I'm picking bits of yellow plastic out of my teeth and the mangled flesh that used to be my hands. ****ing chains. Why can't they build a ****ing bike without a ****ing chain. I can't even get drunk right now for the pain because I have to work at 6am tommorrow. Grrrr....

yeah, but isn't he on his way into work on these rides? with all this bike trouble, he's probably late a lot, and so will soon lose his job. that should level the playing field.

I heard it was made in Japan by a former framebuilder from 3Rensho.

Landgolier 05-10-06 07:33 AM

Sounds like you both need to learn to fix your bikes.

1fluffhead 05-10-06 07:35 AM
