Wanted to give you all an update about Maketh’s bike. And maybe introduce the new people here to him.

Maketh is one of The Lost Boys of Sudan. If you don’t know their story, spend a few minutes doing a search.

A few years ago I asked Maketh if he’d enjoy riding a bicycle. His eyes lit up. Since then I promised myself that I’d always take care of his bicycling.

The community donated a huge old Schwinn touring bike. The frame is a whooping 29 inches. It’s huge.

Maketh was hit recently on the bike path by another cyclist. His bike was damaged worse than he was aware.

I just spent the weekend replacing the wheel, having the bent fork tweaked, changing the bar tape, general cleaning. It looks great and brought a giant grin on his face.

He asked me how much I owed him and I played dumb, said don’t worry about it, I just replaced a spoke and oiled the chain. After surviving on his wits in the jungle being hunted by lions he knew I was lying but let it end there anyway.

I mention this for two reasons. One, when you buy a copy of Riding Fixed, all “profits” go to keep Maketh rolling.

Second, if any of you Chicago people see a very tall, thin black man on a blue Schwinn the size of Stop sign, give him a wave and a smile. The guy is super shy, but he’ll still appreciate it. He’s an orphan a long way from home so make him feel welcomed. He lives up near Edgewater.

P.S. if anyone’s got a decent pair of pedals lying around that they would like to donate let me know via PM. Maketh’s pedals need to be replaced.

And this is why we should all love Mayo.

sloppy robot 05-17-06 11:57 AM

wait.. this is why we love mayo, annd this is why we hate don walker.. im confused

calling a zine of corney fixed stories a "non-profit" is one of the funniest things ive ever heard

pimping your goods is pimping your goods...just sayin'

hyperRevue 05-17-06 12:00 PM

Is Mayo taking the money raised from sales for himself?

does don walker make a profit? maybe now, yes.. but im sure hes had years of "non-profit" work

and mayo does get to promote his name and his work, under the guise of a "non-profit" organization

one might say he's profiting recognition...

like i said.. pimpin' is pimpin'

Rancid 05-17-06 01:14 PM

does someone a WAAAAAmbulance? Jeez just get the book or don't.

For the record-I got mine!

Mayonnaise 05-17-06 01:30 PM

you guys need to relax a bit, maybe start seeing good instead of being cynical. The fixed gear writing I’ve done was posted here for all to read without ever considering making money.

because of the demand from others it was decided a hard copy would be printed and sold. The money made from these sales went to cover the cost of layout, printing, etc.

After all costs were covered I was sent a check. I sent the total amount of this check to the Red Cross to help with the tsunami relief.

It was my feeling that since this project started as a communal effort the money should be put back into the community in the service of good.

The original printing came and went yet I still received many emails asking for copies. Eventually, The Fixed Gear Gallery suggested I let them print out a few and offer them for sale on their website. I agreed.

Half of the asking price of the book now goes to printing and maintaining the FGG website. The other half goes to me.

As stated, all money made goes back to the community and I thought it appropriate to tell the forum that there was one rider in Chicago whose life is a bit better because people are reading and buying Riding Fixed. And to say hello if you see him.

Certainly I’d like as many people to read and buy Riding Fixed as possible. If you choose to use an ugly word like “pimping” to describe what I am doing, then so bit it. But you are wrong.

Mayonnaise is now and has always been a fictional character, created for this forum. No different than what any of you have done: hiding behind your screen name saying things online you’d never say in person. I could care less about generating any recognition.

What I do care about is helping in some small way making Maketh’s day a bit brighter and keeping the FGG up and running so I can look at pictures of bikes.

You may like the writing, you may not, that’s up to you. And perhaps the subject matter has made it too easy for you to think bashing me is fun and permissible. I have, in a sense asked for it. Which is why I’ve made repeated postings letting everyone know my efforts in helping others who haven’t had it so easy. That there is a complexity to Mayonnaise that many have chosen to overlook.

evanyc 05-17-06 01:34 PM

seriously, get over it. if you don't want to buy the book, don't. it's something mayo created, he's proud of it, it's related to the topic of the forum, people here are interested in it, and it is non-profit. profits are being donated, not kept. quit hatin'

this forum picks the strangest people to pick on for the strangest reasons sometimes.

shishi 05-17-06 01:53 PM

Ok, I'll say it. JUST GO READ

absntr 05-17-06 02:17 PM

I still have the First Edition, *swoon* -- next time I see you Mayo, you're signing it for me.

The new edition has more stories yeah? I'll pick it up.

sloppy robot 05-17-06 02:27 PM

ok.. point missed.. ill explain

first.. i love sharing.. no one was more excited for show n tell in 3rd grade then lil sloppy robot. I love seeing peoples handmade bags, bikes, books.. i even like reading about shants goofy hats. (that custom frankenstein one was nice) And i like seeing D.W.s road bike (built by a guy who mostly makes track bikes.. )

it annoys me that this place erupted when don posts a road bike.. Whine-one-one had to be called for forum riot police...don might be abrasive at times.. but he serves up a ton of useful information .. things that most of us don't know.. if the trade is a road bike..then who cares?

Honestly, not to pick on Mayo.. but the only other thread I remember by him was about some article he wrote for some newspaper. Not to judge, post away i say... my question is.. why is it o.k for some people to do and others its a cardinal sin?

which got me to my point that promoting is promoting.. is this place for it or against it?

thats all i was sayinnnnnnnnn, yo

What's with all this hatred towards Don Walker? He's always been a very nice guy to me.

old don could be a lil rough, but then again, can't we all.. new don is is a lot more chill...

raygunner 05-17-06 05:46 PM

It kinda looks like Mayo is running a freewheel on his Masi. But "Riding Single Speed" wouldn't have the same panache.

And dude, those Lost Boys are vampires! Jack Bauer is their leader! I hope he can get a secure line & use the potty this season.
