Seatpost Polish + Refinish?

That's my seatpost. It has those dark spots + pits in it. I'm not sure if it was made like that, or if that's just age. It's old, it was free, etc, so I'm not too worried about it, but I like how it's fluted so I wouldn't mind keeping it. Would it be possible to polish/buff it up and get it nice and shiny? I was thinking maybe some steel wool + some kind of metal polish, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe this needs to go to another section, I duno.

Polishing compound and a rag. Buy it at the auto parts store. $5 for a tub.

Cool, I'll give that a try. Any particular brands you've used that you recommend?

Show some Motherly love to it:

That is the best AluPolish around. I had a polished Santa Cruz that used to get dull and when I used the Mothers Polish on it, it got shinier that it was when it was new. The Harley guys used that to get that mirror finish on aluminium engine blocks,

Try some 1000 grit sandpaper, then move up to 1500, then 2000. Afterwards use Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish. Takes some work but its well worth it. Polish isn't enough to remove the pitting.

For anyone who cares, this is how it turned out...

Sanded it lightly, then polished with Mothers Mag junk.. worked great.

Cool

You might try one of those green 3m scuff pads for the flutes. They work great on stuff like that. (Don't cut a flat spot like sand paper does anyway... )

Real nice! I was planning to do that as well, with a seat post that looks exactly like that. All I know is it came on my old Fuji Delrey, and it says Sugino on top. No idea what model.

Yeah, I want to try some steel wool or something for the flutes, they didn't come out too great.
This is some old SR "royale" - it's nothing special, but I figured I'd clean it up..

The green 3M scrubby pads work really well to clean up steel.
