Shortening a Chain
I'm converting an old frame into a fixed-gear and I will need to shorten my chain.
I want to know how to figure out how short I will need to cut the chain. Is there some way of temporarily installing the chain, then testing to see how short I will need to make it? Any help would be appreciated. |
put the wheel in, wrap the chain around the cranks and the cog and see how many links you need to take off, break off the excess chain, put it together. TADAA.

Use a chain breaking tool not a hack saw.

i find a well placed karate chop is the most effective way to break a chain...or 35 pieces of wood.

Cut an old wire hanger into a section about 8 inches long and then bend 1/2 inch of each side into an L shape. Put you wheel in and secure it as close as you can to the seat tube. Use your new chain tool to hold the ends of the chain together. Then break your chain and re-attach. Then slide your wheel away from the seat tube to tension.

No do use a hacksaw its much more fun or a karate chop as stated above.

Sometimes I gotta use a karate chop after I push the pin through an old chain, ****ers don't break apart sometimes.
|
its all about a 1 inch punch to the proper pin.

There is a strong correlation between riding fixies and being sarcastic
