Track Bike SS Couple'd pics (NJS Bridgestone)
I picked out a nice NJS Bridgestone track bike from Stratton D, and have decided
to convert it to a ss couple'ed bike.
The plan is make it an easy to get-around-europe bike, I have a San Rensho, and a Bobby Jackson
but have found that they are a little to nice to constantly break down,
and try to pack up for quick weekend trips, out of Stansted airport.
I grew up outside of Philadelphia, so getting Bilenky's to do it, was an easy choice.
From the pictures, you might be able to see the rear triangle widened to 120 cm,
and the rear bridge replaced with a stronger bridge so that
a rear brake can be attached.
I am also going with a re-paint to bright yellow. The couplers
will allow it to be back-packed up. A fixie might be the ideal bike for something like this,
as reassembly can be done much easier when not having to deal with derailleur's.
The brakes, ... I thought about for weeks, but in the end I decided that I am going with a set of
Phil's flip flop's - see I want the ability to go either fixed or free, so I had Bilenky's filet on a set of brake inlets
for a rear brake, the front was already drilled. I am also going with a DaVinci brake line, which
ought to make dissasembley even easier, prolly going with a set of short pull Paul Cross lever's on some
bullhorns.
For the drive train, mebee a Miche crankset, and being flip'able, going to try 2 different gears
on the back, 22 and 16, give the bike some range, a set of high flange 32 hole Phils, laced
to some CXP33's, .. should be a sturdy wheel set.
I have a top to bottom NJS San Rensho, which unfortunately I rarely ride, it has become something
of wall art, I am hoping to ride the ****e out this bike , all over Europe the next couple of years.
Somehow I couldn't see myself doing it on a Brompton.
The Bridgestone's were such a rock solid bike back in the day there is an excellent write

Sacramento, (he has a few old Rivendell Reader's, which are great stories),
I have been on the look out for a Bridgestone.
Great frames, and maybe something special for a project bike like this.
I can imagine there might be a few of you that cringe at the thought about cutting a NJS in half, and
putting brakes on it!! eeks sounds sacrireligious,
but it ought to be a great solid ride, I will put the rest of the pic's up, as I finish it.

I'm half "sigh" and half "awesome!!", but I'm gonna stick with awesome though, as if you didn't do the coupler thing it would've been lackluster, but now its just the ****. Good job, and I definitely wanna see it assembled.

Nice story. I'd like to get an S&S coupled frame one day and it'd most likely be a Jackson (I currently have one and love it).
I've seen a Bilenky custom (S&S) that my friend's girl has. They do nice work there.

Worst idea ever.
A custom frame+ss couplers is probably around the cost of buying the bridgestone+surgery+ss couplers+ repaint.
Sure you don't have the street cred with a new custom, but you lose all street cred when you hack and repaint that thing.

ah phooey. you can get a bridgestone frame for about 3 bills through eframebank; they're not the zootiest of njs frames, and what he's proposing to do isn't going to **** it up in any way.

Eddie, maybe you can get a frame from framebank, but i sure can't. If so I'd have that 59cm Nagasawa that they had for like 400 bucks. Granted, there are much nicer japanese frames around than Bridgestone's, but it's still pretty damned nice. Nice enough that I don't think I'd want to chop it in half. I appreciate the idea of S and S couplings, but they still freak me out.
And yeah, street cred? With who? I see this term on here a lot and it never fails to baffle me. Who the hell are you guys trying to impress?

i'm not sad because its njs, i just think its just a shame
that any decent frame be hacked in two and some coupling
devices attached. i don't think its necessary for any frame.

they're not just any old devices travsi, they're designed so this can be done without damaging the ride quality and they're top-notch equipment and look sweet too, like vanilla frame protectors (your black bike would look great with em).

...yeah, i know what they are...i guess i'm a bit spoiled
being here in europe with a better bicycle transportation
system. but i guess if one flies (alot) then it could justify
the ss couplers from a practical stand point...but if i travelled
that much i'd probably also have enough money to buy
a nice bike case.

i fully approve this project! awesome stuff. lemme know how much it costs to put couplers on, cause i'd kinda like to do that with my benotto conversion
