Ping Ping Ping Ping
is the sound my front wheel is making when I put weight on it... I've only had the wheel since last November:
the wheel is radial laced iro to a crappy sun deep v style rim it sounds really bad, whats going on? what can I do? save me a trip to the LBS? Thanks for any help |
bearings?
sure it's not your bars or stem?
...
you can tell its coming from the load/tension on the: a)spokes b)rim c)hub fo sho
my friend's wheel made noise that might be simliar once, but it was his spokes rubbing together (not tight enough i guess) ... with radial lacing i couldn't see how the spokes would make any noise, unless the nipples are moving somehow in the rim? that's why i was thinking the bearings might need repacking.
ahhhh...
there is a little movement where the nipples and rim meet... what causes that? why would the bearings need repacking so early in the wheels life? forgive me, I don't know a thing about wheels, and I've tried to the normal research online... |
try putting a little dab of lube on each spoke nipple and giving the wheel a good spin.
That sounds like spokes popping out of their threads to me. At least the description sounds like stress relieving a wheel. Also, I think Sun makes pretty good rims, I've been riding their cheapest 700 for all the school year, improperly tensioned for months, improperly laced for a couple months, respoked, bashed around and it's doing fine.
is it at the same point at every rotation, or when you go over bumps?
Check your bearings. Make sure the cups (I think that's what they are) are properly tightened down on them and the wheel isn't slipping sideways. You'll also be able to tell there's a problem if your wheel is properly tightened down and it has play from side to side.
This isn't guaranteed to be your problem, it's just something that might be causing the noise. |
what is the history of this wheel? who built it? how good was the build? which sun rim/what spokes/what nipples/which hub? too many variables. more info needed.
Motherbox?
sounds like a stress relief issue but shouldn't that have kicked in earlier?

Also, make sure that they are tensioned properly. If you don't know how to true/tension your wheels take them to the professional at your Local Bike Shop. :D |
lbs today...
they tightened the spokes a bit and advised lubing the nipples |
