Freewheel to singlespeed

Hello all. I have an older road wheel with a 126 mm spacing that accepts a 7 speed freewheel. Can a single cog freewheel fit to be used for a singlespeed? Are there any spacers that will be needed? Thanks.

I think it would thread on okay but not sure it would line up with your crank.

if its an older road bike, you may be able to just swap the spindle to get a proper chainline

what I did was to remove the 7spd freewheel and redish the rim and then thread on a bmx style freewheel....worked just fine

You can futz with the spindle and the chainrings, but usually some wheel redishing is required, especially on a 126 that fits a 7 speed.

...or get truly ghetto fabulous if it's just a beater, and take off the rear D, shorten the chain, and just run it on whatever gear combo gives you good chainline and gearing. The nice part is if the chainline is a little off and it drops the chain in the back, it just upshifts rather than totally throwing it. Craptacular, but why put money into a beater?

depending on the type of freewheel and how threaded it is as opposed to splined, you could spin off the outer cogs, slide off the splined cogs, spin 1 of the threaded cogs back on and hope you got a perfect chainline with one of the chainrings. I did this when I first converted my bike and lucked out. Otherwise, cop a bmx freewheel and have someone redish/respace unless you can do it yo self. Good luck.
