i talked up portland so much when i was down south that i almost began to doubt myself, but there was no need for doubt. it's everthing it's cracked up to be and more. and i will never forget that again.

I've seen that guy with the hand bike several times while riding up in the hills. Amazing.

Hey, I lived right down the hill form you, on 23rd and Lovejoy -- right above the gelato store next to the Nob Hill Bar and Grill.

I used to go on these amazing runs up there -- straight up the hill to the Pittock Mansion, down the other side, across Burnside, then up through Washington Park, back past the rose garden, and then down across Burnside again. I really miss the hills and the sequoia trees. Awesome neighborhood!

yeah, it is nice... even though it's just about the most hoity-toity central neighborhood, there are still plenty of good cheap bars. and the walks/runs/rides (rides if you are insane and love hills) are beautiful.

anyway, the girl does ride a black track bike. a mercier, specifically.

she is obviously a shill.

I've been thinking of moving up to Portland in Spetember. I have the chance to finish my program at the Portland UO campus. Portland is known to many arch dorks and city planners as the best city in the country. I think I agree. I was thinking of living in SE Portland, ideally within a mile or 2 of the Hawthorne of Morrison bridges to be close to school. What's the area like? Bars? Resturants? Grocery? Rent? Is any part of the city more bike friendly than another?

The fast guy on the orange fixie was probably Erik Voldengen. He's a team mate of mine and yes, he is a very fast sprinter, he rode that bike in the swan island criterium fixed race and broke away twice and won a bunch of primes. Was the bike really large and was he wearing a green and yellow jersey?

All of central portland, including the area you describe, is nice and has all of the amenities you mention. Rent is substantially higher than it is in Eugene. The whole city is bike friendly, and user-friendly for that matter.

I don't remember.
