i was there once with a friend's band and i've never wanted to go back. my sister, on the other hand, lives there and loves it.

deimos 05-20-06 12:15 AM

slc has its moments but they are few and far between. i guess its all in your attitude and outlook as all things are. i stay for my daughter who lives here but not with me. so i guess we make sacrifices for the things we love.

plus its the behive state - this colony sprung up about ten feet outside my front door last night.

you best get some honey out of that.

i go there for 1 week every winter and it rules! best snowboarding ever.
but i always want to go back home at the end of that week.

Try being trapped 100 miles north of SLC while springtime blooms in the Bay Area. Brutes..

queerpunk 05-20-06 09:39 AM

slc does suck, but i know for a fact that there's a crew of bikeheads there.

nme 05-20-06 10:35 AM

me and my 5 wives say salt lake city is good.

wait, so you are in boise...i thought you were in the bay area. ah, well. you should come visit portland sometime...springtime blooms pretty nicely here, too.

freebird 05-20-06 05:53 PM

Actually (hijack) I'm staying with my parents in SE Idaho while my house in Weiser gets ready. I'd LOVE to be in Boise right now. I dig that town.
We'll hit up Portland later in the summer when we're settled a bit.

it does suck... a lot. you couldn't pay me to move back there.

SLC used to have a CRAZY straight edge scene... most of the shows i'd go to would get ruined by a bunch of crazy, violent straightedge crews. it was awful.

i go back occationally to visit old friends and to get tattoos (great shops out there!). i never see fixies out there. maybe they are just too busy with their wives to ride bikes.

Say what you may, but SLC can be pretty sweet. I just spent 6 months out there and had a blast (mostly). Sure there's not much a city, in fact its just about all sprawl. And the liquor/alcohol laws were ridiculous. But (as someone stated earlier) the snowboarding (and skiing) is great, as is the mountain biking and rock climbing. And these are all pretty much within the city. So if you're looking for world-class snow, trails, and rocks AND a fixed gear scene AND monday night punk rock kareoke AND a 1/2 pound burger topped off with pastrami... then look no further.
If any y'all have any questions about SLC, feel free to PM me and hopefully i can answer your questions.

PS. go to Todd's and monday nights and say hi to Michelle the bartender for me.

Yep - i've been too many shows where those kids did in fact end shows early because the band would get fed up with all the monkey ass spin kicking fools packing fists with equalizers starting fights with everyone they came into contact with. One time (this was sweet) Rollins came and played all BF songs with Keith Morris in the basement of DV8, those kids showed up looking for ****, at the first sign of them getting crazy Rollins hopped of the stage and started personally throwing them out, handing them over to the bouncers. You are right about the good tattoo artists (Lost Art, Big Deluxe) some of those guys have ******** skills.

There are actually a ton of fixies out here: All the messengers (at least the ones at LMI), most of the bike collective board of directors, probably most of the bike punx, and a bunch more. And more and more I see people riding fixed in the city.

Hey hellhammer12 -

where you at? i just moved down by 9th and 9th from the aves. i was just down at lmi the other day showing jason my new iro and getting it tuned up. yeah i am starting to see more and more fixed bikes all the time. hit me up if you wanna ride sometime. did you go to the gallivan yesterday?

popluhv 05-21-06 08:33 PM

Are you familiar with Brian Evenson's work? He got kicked out of/quit working at BYU, and writes good stories.

Maybe you can find some consolation.

(my apologies to the internet in general, for dropping his name everywhere, but I do love the guy.)

I live in the courts (northeast kitty corner of pioneer park. For Gallivan, do you mean for the alley cat (we had the uta bike bonanza there friday night. I was at Gallivan for the ac but didn't get to ride because I had a wedding reception to be at. I'll let you know about the riding. Speaking of which, this friday is critical mass. Easily, there are a good number of us (maybe half) riding fixed.

I think I have heard of him, I remember some writer getting kicked you of the "Y" (as in, WHY would you want to go there?). I actually like it here in SLC (originally from CT, so I guess I have an easier time being here not being from here), but that is probably because I got some good mates. Also, being a graduate student doesn't leave much time for dealing with the momos (i.e., the dominant culture). Plus, being downtown, one really does not deal with the much anyway.

I LOVE SLC. But I grew up in the suburbs on the south end of the valley. I'm now in the heart of the metro area and I'm in love with it! There is diversity, tons of places to eat/drink, and hundreds of places for outdoor activity! I recently discovered City Creek Canyon! Pretty cool, I think. I have seen a ton of fixie messengers as well, but I work right next to the office right off of Main. I see them all the time! Did anyone make it to the Alley Cat Sat?

I arrived at the end of it due to having to go to a wedding reception. I heard it was cool, 30 people did it.
