From the sounds of it, though, the only way I'd (now) consider an NYCBikes frame is if I went to their store in NYC and could check it out before purchase. I would have had no problem getting one over the 'net before this thread, so thanks to you all.

Since my chances of getting to NYC are just about nil, it looks like an NYCBikes frame is right out for me. When I seriously start looking at new frames, that is.

Thanks again.

there are a lot of people bashing NYC bikes' online and phone customer service, but i'd just like to take a moment to bash their in-store service as well. i've gone in there looking for a helmet, where i was informed in by Will a very pissy voice that they didn't carry helmets in adult sizes and what did i need one for anyway?

i went in on the day of the dumbo alleycat looking for a CO2 cartridge, or a minipump, either would do, and was told that they had neither. the customer service was so excellent that Will took time out of yelling at his wheelbuilding servants to inform me that i didn't need that stuff either and that i should just go ride. i took his advice and will never go back.

How does this guy stay in business? How is it that he was in Bicycling mag a few issues back (which is what brought my attention their way) and Tony/IRO was not?

He should take his own advice and crack his skull open.

IM guessing he stays in business because he sells bikes to people that dont do much research and find out how much they suck before buying things from them. The outward appearance of the website and the bikes to an uninformed consumer is that they are pretty decent. I know personally i buy alot of stuff online sigh unseen with no idea of the customer service.

Which reminds me. IRO cycles needs a better website. I think with a little revamp he could sell alot more bikes. Alot of people base decisions on how good the companies website looks.

you have a point, but it cuts both ways. i'm more comfortable knowing that my money is going to quality stuff and towards the salary of a decent guy than going towards will's website designer (who may or may not be a decent guy). there are a lot of compromises that tony could make in the name of selling more bikes, but he seems to have figured out a pretty good formula. i don't know iro's sales numbers, but i suspect they're doing pretty well these days.
