KMC Kool Chain question
I have been looking at new chains and was wondering what "mushroomed pinned" means? I am thinking that the pins have a mushroom like top on the ends to hold the plates in place, is that correct? Does that mean I would need a special chain tool to break the chain? Would I need special mushroom pins to re-join the chain together? Specifically the chain that I am looking at that says this is the KMC 810 Kool Chain.

Without knowing anything about that exact chain, I think you analysis is probably right on. Mushrooming the rivet heads would make for a chain that is less likely to come apart, but it would also take more force to press a rivet out. I bet you can break it with a normal chain tool, but I wouldn't try to reassemble it using the pin you pressed out since the flange is almost certainly shot. This sounds like a perfect time to use a master link.
Given how much of a pain that sounds like, why not just scare up some kind of normal chain that can be cut and reassambled without worrying about mushroomed heads and stuff? |
I've got one an used a normal chain tool to shorten it and then used the provided master link.
I dig it. Nice chain. Quiet and smooth. |
dont eat the mushroom chains. They will make you see things.
