noob wheel build question! please help! totally lost.

Hey all!

I ride a converted SS bike with super flexy wheels (shimano whr-550). i am entertaining the thought of building a new rear wheel with an actual track hub. I was wondering if it was possible to build a 130mm spacing track hub and have the chainline work with a bike that is using a triple chainring crank (both inside and outside chainrings are removed. only the middle one is used).

If it's possible, do you guys have any good recommendations for a streetable track hub? (read: properly sealed to keep out the garbage).

I ordered the low-flange fixed hub. rear-only is $45
This is my first wheel build- a real challenge

^thanks so much for the iro hub link! i think i will go with that. but the problem of chainline still remains!

the frame was originally made for shimano 8 speed. would putting this hub on alter my chainline at all? (if it does, how can it be corrected?)

you might have to change your BB to work with the hub. you can also order that from IRO - $10 i think.

rear spacing has no bearing on your chainline.

the middle ring of your triple has a ~45mm chainline
the IRO hub+cog combo would give you a ~42mm chainline.
3mm off is verging on a little too big for my tastes (I try to keep it under 2mm)

(then again, if you're building it up with a freewheel, your chainline in the back will be closer to 44mm - so it should be OK)

so you'll either need
- a new crank
- a narrower BB for your crank
- assymetrical hub spacing and wheel dish (ewwwww)

(then again, if you're building it up with a freewheel, your chainline in the back will be closer to 44mm - so it should be OK)

I had a similar set up on my old frame and I was able to fix it with a slightly narrower bb. 20 bucks and the problem went away.

a combination of axle spacers on your rear hub and chainwheel spacers between your crank and chainwheel are the cheap solution. you might have to dish the wheel asymmetrically in order to get your sprockets to line up, this is much easier to do when you build the wheel than it is afterwords. the guys at harris cyclery are real helpful to their internet customers and can help you figure out what you need. cheers, and good luck!

depending on what cog or freewheel you're using in the back, your chainline could vary another 2 to 3mm...

check sheldon's chainline page for more info:

yeah, mos def measure your front chainline first. then you'll know whether you need to space a track hub or not. Track hubs come standard 42mm chainline regardless of axle length.
