NYC BF MINGUS night
The Mingus Big Band plays at the Iridium Jazz club (1650 Broadway) every Tuesday night: https://www.iridiumjazzclub.com/bio.php?id=187
I've been listening to Mingus all day long today. And now that I've had a few beers, I wish I was there, listening to the big band play live. The first time I heard mingus was from the big band when they played downtown 10 years ago. I've seen them maybe 5 times since then, including once at the Beacon Theatre when they played with Elvis Costello. Every single time has been absolutely astounding.
There's an 8pm show and a 10pm show. Cover is hefty: $25, but BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU IT'S WORTH IT. Is not all-caps convincing enough? I struggle to imagine what else could be. It's not something to do all the time, but it's very, very worth it to do at least once, if not once in a while. There are a few people on here who I've talked to about mingus, and I don't know if you've ever seen the mingus big band...but you should. I'm going next Tuesday.

The mrs. and I just got our first Mingus disc a few weeks ago. It is awesome. I'd be interested in going to see that. What time were you going to go?

tonight, I was going to go to the 10pm show, but that was only because I had some work to do ahead of time. Next week, probably the 8pm show.

Mingus is the great. Been listening to him since I was 18 and he was the one got me playing upright bass. The big band is a great example of what a great composer he is. Most any mMingus album is good, but watch out for tons of bootlegs. Also, Beneath the Undergod is a great read. I might be up for Tues.
In his later days he took to yelling at the audience if they were being to noisy.

There was some story of him jumping over the drummer & attacking the sax player with his bass because he pulled a knife on him. Something like that. I'm probably making half of it up. Either way, Mingus was a hothead. But he made awesome music. The Complete Town Hall concert is one of my faves, partially because it was a disaster of a show, but mostly because of the impromptu "In a mellowtone" started up by the band. They tried to pull the curtain on the band, and you can hear the audience protesting it. It's awesome.

Mingus big band/orchestra is the cats ass, the tits, the jam, and frickin sweet all in one. Go see them. Seen the orchestra twice so far and they kicked ass both times. Too bad they had to close the damned fez. If you have a student ID card of some sort its a helluva lot cheaper.
PS: GO LATE NEXT MONTH SO I CAN COME

fav comp is Half-mass, only cause he wrote when he was like 16 or 17. Brought out the music 20 years later for the cats to play, it was yellow and crumbling.
S9, most Mingus stories tend to be true, which is kinda shocking. Some of the docs about him are pretty damn good as well. Check out the Mingus one where he gets evicted from his loft space. It is 30 minutes of him just shooting the ****.

MINGUS night!
8pm tonight.
I'm going to scout the checkpoint during the day today to see what it's like getting a group in there...do we have to get there early? Should we make reservations? I don't know any of this stuff. So I'm gonna ask questions. Tough questions. So far, I've got a rough estimate of five people: roscoe, enlacalle, christiank, shishi, and myself. I'm not saying I expect you all to come, but I'm just coming up with a rough idea of what to say if I need to say we need reservations. It might not even be necessary.
