I'm looking for this type of helmet....
 

I dodged yet another bus today. I dodge them more often than I'd like to, as I think most of us do. I've been riding without a helmet for a long time, and so far I've avoided head trauma by almost sheer luck alone. My nine lives have run out and it's time to get a helmet.

I've seen from time to time helmets that are pretty low profile. They almost look like the old leather noggin' nets, but they have a modern plastic shell to them. I know these low profile helmets don't offer the best protection, but given that I use a baseball cap for skull protection, I would say it's a 100% safety improvement.

My question is, are these low profile helmets still being made, if so by whom, and where or how can I purchase one? (I live in Minneapolis if that helps in any way.)

I used one when I rode BMX. I took a bad slam on a quarterpipe and it saved me from being a vegetable.

i have this exact helmet - i wear it when skating my friends pool (you would too if you fell as often as me)

i wear a vintage specialized sub-6 helmet when racing

imho - the early sub-6 helmets (without the plastic outer shell) is the best cycling helmet - ever. however they are no longer legal. i had one of those too, until my parrot decided to make/chewed an additional "vent."

limar helmets are pretty low profile compared to the bells and giros of the world.

i really like mine.

Not enough vents on snowboard/skate helmets... your head gets mad sweaty. I switched from Giro to Bell this year and vaguely regret it - the Bell is too wide and gives me a bit of the mushroom head thing.

Have to wait until next season (or first head bashing crash) until I can justify buying a new one though.

The mushroom head thing: that's exactly what I want to avoid. I've been looking for a pic of the kind of helmet I'm looking for all morning while trying to avoid the boss's all-seeing eye. The helmet looks almost exactly like an old leather net. I'll keep looking for a picture....

good luck finding one. they're only made of eva foam, so they aren't rated safe by CPSC standards and therefore very hard to find in the US (if they are still even being made).

high-5 for people looking to buy helmets that aren't really helmets. its like your getting the bad look of helmet without the protection.

I was gonna buy that Carrera in Trackstar, but when I held it I changed my mind.

I just got a Giro Pheumo today and really like the fit. I can't stand bulky helments.
I know its pricey, but I got it for 109 from performace plus another 10% off.

those lovely big vents look almost lovely and big enough to let the edge of a kerb stove your head in.

+1. i just got a bell ghisallo and it's not too mushroomy and it's really lightweight and well ventilated.

those skate helmets are severly lacking in the vent dept. . .summer's coming, friends.
