Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

One of my co-workers participated in an alley cat in Detroit a few weeks back and had a lot of fun.

Good to see Detroit picking up the slack. When I lived there it was pretty dead.

Hurry it up so it'll be in time for 6/6/06! Back Alley Bikes is a bike co-op in Detroit, they're open for anything on Tuesdays from 6-9, if you need to use tools or anything. I'd recommend getting their as early as possible.

Not sure if AA has it's own co-op.

and Zero, yeah I wasn't able to make the last one (was still in Chicago) but I heard it went pretty well. Scavenger hunt style.

I have to buy the frame, and rebuild the rear wheel. Know anyplace around here that will build a wheel for cheap? I have been quoted 60 bones at a bike store in AA. How far is the co-op from Ypsilanti, I'm not too familar with actual Detroit.

Back Alley is probably around 40 miles from Ypsi. They'll do some work for pay (err donations), but I'm not sure if wheel building is one of those things.

Comercial shops I've used are American Cycle and Fitness and Continental Bike Shop. Not sure how much they'd charge to build a wheel, and again they are kinda far from Ypsi/AA.

Nope. Neither does Ypsi. Detroit's is the closest I know of.
