Davis - stuff not to miss?
I'm heading up to check out the UC Davis campus on wednesday and would like to know if there is anything that is a real must-see in the way of bike shops, co-ops, and cool old haunts. I'm bringing my fix, so I'd love to ride around the city. I know about the Bike Barn and cycling club, but would like some more tips/hints/bull****. Thank you.

Not a lot happens in Davis, but if you go down the road to downtown Sacramento its a really cool place to ride. Nice and flat, not too much traffic, and tons of folks on bikes. Check out the Beat, a record store on J street and (I think) 22nd. I never get out of there for less than $50. There is also a rastafarian vegan food stand in that vicinity that is pretty cool. Someone on here mentioned a new Sacto bike co-op in the Oak park area as well, I just dont know the details or if it is even open yet.

You missed the Davis Double Century !
I did it last year, on my Waterford and I almost died, I didn't get in until 7:00 at night!! For LBS's - Steve Larsen's Wheelworks is very low key, and much friendlier than I was treated at at B&L on 3rd street(warning :'Tude alert) |
There's not a whole lot here. If you need someone to show you around on wednesday afternoon, I'll be around. Send me a PM. Just don't expect me to know where everything on campus is, since I don't go to school here. :)
You're from Santa Cruz? Awesome. I grew up in Aptos. Edit: And no, the co-op in oak park wont be open for a few more weeks. |
If you guys come into Sac PM me. I'm always down for a ride. You can get a sneak peak at our new co-op. There is already beer in the fridge.

Food --
Redrum Burger on Olive Drive. The Hotdogger on E Street. G Street Pub For nicer food, try Little Prague (German-Czech) on G street or Symposium (Greek) on E 8th Street. Bike Shops -- B&L - They don't sell many FG, but they can build them and talk about them. Nice staff, in my opinion. Freewheeler -- Trek and Giant. Great selection of 24 speed comfort bikes. Wheelworks -- Uber Roadie. They're nice about it though. Ken's Bike and Ski - Good prices. Only shop that sells more than one brand of touring bike. Davis Bike Exchange -- Grumpy jerk runs the place. Sells used crap and charges too much for it. UCD Bike Barn - Where you go if you don't know how to inflate your tires. There's also a bike coop called the Bike Church located in the Domes on Baggins End. Worth checking out if they are open. Best shop around for FG is Bicycle Business in Sacramento on Freeport. You can take Yolobus to Sacramento and take your bike. You can also ride to Sacramento across the infamous Yolo Causeway. If you ride down West Capitol, watch out for wrong-way riders. The Arboretum is nice. If you go to the UCD coffeehouse, directly across a small courtyard from it is a room that is now used for a study hall. That used to be the old coffeehouse. In the late seventies, the Police, the B-52's and the Talking Heads played there. There is a Tower Records on F street. The record store across the street is cooler. Bogey's books is the best book store in town. It's just down from Espresso Roma. Both are on E street. The Chancellor is actually a cool guy. Wednesday night FARMER's MARKET at Central Park. If you want to see lots and lots of girls in bikinis, go to the UCD Rec Pool. It's at the corner of Hutchinson and La Rue. I did go to school there. What are you planning on majoring in? |
Wow, thanks Mr. C. That's quite a load of info! I don't really know what I'm going to major in, I was leaning towards anthropology/sociology, but I'm really not sure anymore. But I've got another year...
