cop knocked me off my bike today

every day on my way to and from work, i pass by the entrance to an office park. there's a crosswalk across the entrance road. the on one end of the crosswalk, the curb slopes down, but on the other, there's about a 6" high curb. now in the mornings, i just zip down the sloped side and then veer about 4' to the left and go across the crosswalk and back up on the bike path.

so today i'm riding home, and there's a cop standing out near where te entrance road meets a higher speed route, "directing" the handful of cars exiting the park. i don't think anything of it, and as i roll off the lowest part of the curb, heading directly towards the crosswalk along the edge of the curb, i hear the cop yell "crosswalk! crosswalk!". he proceeds to grab my handlebar and pull, saying "you're going to be put under arrest sir", effectively knocking me off my bike...and on to the edge of the crosswalk. after i landed i kind grunted out "ugh thanks"

apparently the law is that i am supposed to get off my bike and have him signal to me when i can walk it across the crosswalk that connects the bike path. now i know. and knowing is half the battle

Are there stop signs and other notices? If it was actually connecting a bike path, then I think it's not a crosswalk but part of the bike path, unless it has signs indicating you need to stop and walk your bike.

I hope you got the cop's name and/or badge number. I'm sure that kind of violence is unnecessary.

I got cut off brutally by "THE HEALTH VAN" today (I'm guessing it was a meals on wheels type of thing that was heading to a local shelter). The funny part was, I saw it coming a block away when it was waiting to make a right onto the street I was heading down. Anyone w/ a sense of cynicism/sarcasm can't help but fully expect a vehicle w/ those words stenciled down its side in huge block letters to run them down on the street. Luckly, fate didn't let me down and of course there's the van cutting me off to make a right turn directly through/over me. As soon as I saw it coming around me I was just like "Oh, here we go" and veered off onto the sidewalk, did a slow circle, yelled a few choice words at the driver (but only half-heartedly since I was laughing on the inside) and carried on my way.

Odd moment.

Edit: ... I think this related to the OP's comment because ... it's a random mishap that happened in traffic today? ****, I don't even know anymore.

Even if there is a stop sign for the cars, the presence of an officer takes priority over the stop sign if he tells you to stop and you don't. It's no different than trying to empty a sports stadium after a sporting event. You sometimes stop traffic on the street to get cars out of the lot.

Law's th law and all that but the guy KNOCKED YOU OFF YOUR BIKE and that's too much. Especially since he didn't yell stop, he yelled crosswalk. that could be interpreted in any number of ways and stop, well that could be interpreted as, well, stop. Report his ass.

Not to sound too one sided about it, I wouldn't want his job either but you accept a certain amount of responsibility when you choose to be an officer. I hardly think knocking people over for misunderstanding unclear comands is part of that. If you knocked somebody down at your job I bet you'd get reported. Sorry for the rant, bad day.

Arrested just like anyone who runs a stop sign in a car. I've heard of the same threat being tossed in boise, and the worst was a ticket for running a stoplight and no lights.

listen, this is a small upper class town (newton, ma) and he was an old cop. arguing this to his boss probably isn't going to do anything but motivate them to jack my ass up every time they see me. i have no scrapes or bruises, my bike's fine and i could care less about some half assed apology from someone who's forced to give it. that's even if it got to that point, because they probably aren't going to believe my story over his anyways. principal, in this case, is so impractical to pursue that i'm not going to lose any sleep over not doing **** about it. the whole thing was absurd, and i'm not about to see how much more absurd it can get.

Sometimes it's just as important to know when not to make noise. You were there and if yer cool with it, well, then you are. Way to take the high road(no sarcasm intended)

there's a cop directing traffic and you ignored him... what the **** did you expect?

i've seen plenty of cops that love to **** with a kid on a bike, and will joyfully ignore dozens of speeding cars to write up a cyclist for a california roll at a stop sign...
if there's a cop around stop any time you think there might be the slightest reason to stop, and if yer not sure, then slow down...

use yer head...

If a cop yells "Crosswalk! Crosswalk!" at you, WTF does that mean?

The only thing I would have done differently than sers (in my internet fantasy where I am assertive and confident) is tell the cop to please not grab my bars next time, because he could seriously injure me.
