removing brake levers?

i just recieved an older pair of drop bars with the brake levers still on them. they are attached with a steal ring and i can not find a screw on them anywhere. do these just slide off (with a decent amount of grease) or am i just not finding something.

thanks

pull back the hood cover and you will find an allen bolt you can unscrew
it may be directly under the peak of the hood or right on the front...

Or it might be under the lever itself. Pull the lever as though you were braking, and see if there's an allen key bolt underneath.

*scoffs*

Aside from these rather pedestrian recommendations, may I suggest what you actually should* do?

First, disconnect the cables from the brakes. Pull one of the levers as if you were applying the brakes. Look in the crack at the base of the lever that opened up when you pulled on it. There will be a bolt that takes either a hex key or possibly a straight screwdriver. Loosen this screw and the clamp will come loose, allowing you to slide the lever off of the handlebars.

You will likely need to get the cable out of the way to get your tool onto the bolt. This is not very hard, but difficult to explain in writing. Jiggle and press on the cable to slide it further in the direction that pulling the brake lever moves it, and it should begin to come out inside of the lever.

Yep - likely to be impossible with the cable on. With it off - easy.

Please be careful when you are loosening the screw. You may have to unscrew it completely from the "steal ring" to slide the levers off the bars. On many levers there are little washers and spacers under this screw head. They drop out easy and are hard to put back in place. So if you have to unscrew it completely, apply a small amount of pressure from the screwdriver or key on the screw head until the "steal ring" is removed and then screw the ring back onto the lever
