long rides?
ive been doing 1-1.5 hour long rides on my fixie, as i just started training again after track and field. i have a decent aerobic base, just not many cycling miles under my legs at this point, but im getting antsy and want longer rides but am questioning how long i should go on the fixie. i dont want to hurt my knees by overdoing the fixie, but i dont see how much different it is than my road bike, as i try to pedal constantly no matter what im riding. so how many people here regularly ride over 2 hours on their fixie?
i stay on rolling hills with no real climbs when im fixed so maybe that will help. thanks |
I like to, havent much the last couple weeks... but its refreshing to get out in the wind a few times a week.
Currently planning a 5 day to do 400 or so miles at the end of july. (Got a thread about it in touring...) |

a bunch of guys, and one particularly hardcore lady, that i ride with recently did a century fixed. people do double centuries, it's not a matter of what's possible, but what you're up to. listen to your body.

If I hit the road by myself I usually try for the 45-60 range. Time goes out the window depending on the route. Hills, wind, heat, and how I feel will corral the time factor. Throw on a Camelback and ride baby, ride.

In colder months I regularly do 70-80 mile rides on my fixie. If I do those miles on the open road, its no problem. If I do those miles in lots of stop-n-go traffic light situations, my knees will start to tenderize from all the backpedaling and overgeared acceleration. Use a brake to stop, stand as much as possible when climing steep hills and accelerating, and you should be fine.
Overall, however, I experience less knee pain on my fixie than on my geared bike. I think most people with extensive fixed experience will agree with me in saying that the whole fixed gear=knee death rumor is a myth if you take the above precautions. |
