yeah. my last ride over the george washington bridge was all about falling down.

fall down on a metal plate in the rain once, shame on the rain.

fall down on a metal plate in the rain twice, shame on me.

I rode all winter in the rain. love how easy it is to lock up the back tire. heh.

hells yeah. emboldened by the rain and by the "quick lil vid" thread, i tried 180s. got one, not graceful or smooth, though.

did you fall down right afterwards? that's my trick- skid to 180 to on my ass.

i can't ride backwards & have poor balance, so in retrospect, it was a stupid thing to try.

queerpunk 06-09-06 09:35 AM

no, i didn't... it was a fairly slow 180 with a pretty wide arc.

my problem is figuring out how to get the force needed to swing around. i'm not really sure where that's supposed to come from. a combination of turning the fr wheel and leaning in and just committing to trying or falling?

EnLaCalle 06-09-06 09:43 AM

they're called trench plates.

TN! 06-09-06 09:51 AM

this is what I hate about riding in the rain...**** it was raining in LA this morning(according to prodical son).

Gah.. those suck.

Those suck even if your only walking. Ever hit an iced over one? MY GOD.

But back on topic, I love riding in the rain. Its usually always cooler, so I can sprint like a madman and not be heeving because its 97 outside.

Ask anyone from the northwest, we keeps it fresh.

a couple of things makes it easy to ride in the rain.
planet bike clip on fenders.
breathable waterproof jackets [$ but worth it]
a decent hat
and most importantly:
the knowledge that you're going to get wet. if you dress smartly you can stay warm though.

also: a change of pants/shoes when you get to were you're going helps a lot.

Don't actually get as much total water coming from the sky in seattle/portland as you'd expect- most of the time it's overcast, with occasional light rain/misting. Rarely the downpours we've been having here.

The solution to the seattle weather is simple, tho- if you drink enough coffee in the morning, and enough beer in the evening, the constant rain and total lack of natural sunshine is compensated for.

I love the skid pads... I mean trench plates in the rain. And the parking garage under the pru gets slick as ice when it's wet. Pulled a long azz skid in there one time, and then ended up on my ass.

cityraincityst 06-09-06 04:49 PM

Riding the rain is the ****. Dealing with the peds and anxious cars when it rains... not so fun.

fix 06-09-06 06:33 PM

Foam board (like the stuff kids use to make art projects) wedged in the rear above the brake bridge (if you have one) is the best fender ever.

marqueemoon 06-09-06 07:46 PM

I dig riding in the rain, but I prefer 2 brakes and a freewheel when it's really coming down.

ha ha, yeah, it's what most of us in portland do, too...

skelly 06-09-06 10:55 PM

I used to love the rain until my eyes required eyeglasses. Now it's just a pain in the ass because I can't see anything.
