Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? MINNEAPOLIS: sometimes we ride

seems like it's been time for a new place to post rides and whatnot for some time now.

I just got back from Coon Rapids Dam. Learned a lot of new trails and stuff. It was cold and wet. No-one else showed up for the Sat night ride. So I rode for them. Up on the east side of the river, down on the west. That's if you think north is up. 36.75 miles from Dinkytown to my house, probably another 6 to get to Dinkytown. It was a good ride, even if my average was 12mph because I kept getting lost. It's not fun being lost where the streets say 100th, and relative to that, you live around -30th. At least the rain was mostly light.

I think I need food. Who's down for tomorrow afternoon? I promise I'll be slow and sore...

I may be up for it, we'll see how I'm feeling after the ironman. PM me your phone number and I'll call you when I return.

Done. I'm not sure how I'm going to feel tomorrow either. Tonight was probably the longest ride I've done this year, at least without multiple stops...

I didn't see any, but I didn't stay there long. It was chilly up there once I stopped moving, with the spray coming off the river. It pretty much wasn't raining right then.

I think it was better to ride at night. Looking outside now, I don't feel like going anywhere. But in the dark, you can't really see how much rain there is Maybe after some more espresso.

Apparently I got my bike really dirty last night, too.

I'm definitely not riding anymore today. I rode 62 of the hardest miles of my life today. 70 gear inches, averaged probably 17ish mph. Not too shabby, I even made it up the monster hill that everyone was walking their bikes up. I drafted a group of roadies for quite some time, nice of them to pull me along for a while. It was a good time.

Congrats on the ironman!

Anyone else feel like riding in a few hours? It looks like it finally stopped raining, at least for a little while...

If the rain holds off, I'd be up for it. Anywhere in particular you have in mind?

Hadn't really thought about it. It still looks pretty windy, and it's starting to rain again... And my shoes are still soaked.

I think I'm making excuses here...

I have enchiladas in the oven. After I have eaten them, I'm going to digest for awhile, then [edit]take a nap.

It's amazing how umotivated a couple of beers, a full belly and the rain starting up again can make me.[/edit]

I did the ironman on my singlespeed yesterday (I meant to do the 63 mile but missed the turnoff and did the 100 mile ride). It was a wet and windy ride. I did see one fixie out there. At least the rest of the week is supposed to be better.

Congrats on the ironman! I know a few people that were riding it and I felt sorry for them. Riding in the rain can be fun, but 100 miles of rain has got to begin to suck a bit.

One of my good friends from high school got back into town from Michigan Tech over the weekend. I had him bring his bike over and we tore it apart, cleaned and repacked all the bearings (including the pedals!), cleaned the chain and lubed it with good stuff, rewrapped the bars with some rubber tape from the HC, and got all the fiddly bits adjusted nicely. He says it rides a ton better now so we went for a ride on Saturday night. I bought an Arkel Bug pannier bag at the HC the other day and wanted to try out the rain cover and see how it rode, so I tossed some junk in it and we took off across Eagan. We ended up riding about 20 miles, the second half in heavy rain. Not too bad since it was kind of warm out, but I was sure ready for a big blanket and a beer in front of the boob tube by the time we made it back to my place. I'm goona try to bring him up on some rides so y'all will probably have a chance to meet Erik sooner or later. He's pretty damn fast too; I found myself working pretty hard to keep up with him some of the time. ...But I could also outclimb him on my fixie whenever I wanted to, and he was on a 10 speed, so I didn't feel too humbled. He's got a hundred or two miles in for the year and I'm somewhere past 1500.

So, resulting from riding 62 miles in the rain, I have water in both my rims. Is there an easy way to get it out aside from taking out my tire and tube and letting it run out/ evaporate?

It's looking pretty full...

Art opening @ OneOnOne tomorrow night.

No-Name alleycat series kicks off Sunday night @ 6:30pm from Old Man Hennepin park bandshell. $5, winner take all, no roadies. BYOB.

I forgot to post it in the sticky yesterday after I finished the flier. And all the info's at work. I'll get to it later on today. It's going to be the first Sunday of every month, if the wrenches putting it together stay on top of it...

That sounds like a load of fun. When you say no roadies, does that mean no guys with oakleys and jerseys and carbon fiber water bottle cages, or no geared bikes, or what? I've got a buddy with a 12 speed schwinn that would probably be interested in giving this a shot with me. I need to find out if he needs another bike or what.

MacG - Yeah, no spandex is pretty much what the guys were thinking. Normal joes. A couple wrenches from freewheel are putting it together. It's a 'just for fun' type of thing...

mplsminx - I'm at lest going to try to get down there, but probably won't be showing up until it's getting close to over... Gotta work until 9 or 10.
