Eddy Merckx Frame Value?

I've been seeing a nice, barely used 1993 merckx frame in my size for sale recently. It's lugged, pretty, horizontal drops and some chrome on the rear triangle. Any speculators what to estimate it's value? It's been forsale for a while now for $500, but I don't really want to low ball the guy.

Is 13 year old geometry going to ride way differently than a 2004 steel bianchi?

Thanks...

i assume you are talking about a road frame because you said horizontal drops. if thats the case, $500 is a little steep unless it is pristene, has an amazing paint job, or comes with a few extra nice parts. if its just frame and fork, $350-$400 is probably a better value. this all comes from my watching eBay. most ~15 year old merckx road frames are going anywhere from $300-$450 depending on the stuff i listed above (columbus SL or SLX). that said, they dont pop up all the time and if its your size, you may want to shell out a little more $ so you dont have to wait a while until another in your size pops up on eBay.

i have a merckx road frame from about the same time period that i didn't pay anywhere near $500 for... i love it, it makes a great road bike. i rode it fixed for a while until i could find all the parts i wanted to build it up geared, it made a very nice fixed gear (but its even better as a road bike IMO).

**if it is a track frame with track ends and not horizontal drops, $500 is more than fair...

haha, if thats the one you are talking about, i got outbid on it when it was on eBay a while back. it went for a pretty high price (~$450 if i remember right) because it was NOS.

edit: so for the OP, with the campy HS and 3t merckx stem, its probably not a bad deal (but not a steal)... i doubt you will get him to go much lower on that price. also, i think its currently on eBay so if you want it you should act fast.

Yeah, I actually meant to post this to the roadie forum, not fixed. If I bought it, I would be putting gears on. I have an iro beater for a fixed gear, I don't need two (unless it was a real vintage track frame).

Thanks for the price info, I'll check out ebay too...

Whats the deal with the columbus tubing though, SL, SLX, TSX? Which is the difference?

Thanks...
