so i was riding home around 3:30 am last night and with no
warning my seatpost bolt breaks and i flip the bike. the seat apparently
when it broke fell on the back well causing me to go flying forward.
however there were two cops standing there dealing with a taxi
and instead of coming over to help me off the pavement stood
there just looking at me. I walked over to them and they
were like "are you ok?" thats it. so i had a extra seatpost bolt
with me randomnly and started to put it back together. there was
a randomn beat up white car so i placed all my tools and what not on it
and started to work. then this undercover taxi pulls over and this cop
gets out and starts screaming at me to "get my sh** off his car". iam like
what ?? and yells again and threatans to arrest me!!%%%
so i move the things and he starts like saying to his cop friends like
"can you believe this mf putting his wrench on my car.
so i finally got it working and made it home in time for the sunrise
and to discover a huge knot on my kneecap.
i guess it would have been worse had it happened while i was
riding over the queensbridge on the car side with cars zooming
by at 70mph. oh well gotta go get the bike checked out now,
ride safe.

Not that I think his reaction was justified, but I couldn't imagine putting my **** on someone else's car. Granted, I could give a crap about his car, but that doesn't mean I'm going to use it as a workbench.

sometimes keeping those random things in your bag or around the house payoff. i wanted to do a massive purge today of misc. junk ... just may have to wait on that.

I think the irony here, and the reason why this is yet anothe example of NYC cops being pigs, is that they didn;t give a damn about a cyclist potentially being injured, but they are all up in arms about a possible dent to a car.

Most cops are stupid. They think that CAR = HIGHSTATUS and BIKE = LOWSTATUS. Of course, they serve and protect those with high status.

Oh, please. Touching someone's car is not disrespecting their property! If he was just throwing his tools on top of it and scratching it all up, that would be disrespect, but there's no indication that he did that. As long as he was careful about it, he didn't ****ing do anything wrong!

Yeah, that's, yeah... Just put your tools under the car next time. And have a recorder there so you can complain to his *sup. It's one thing to ask, but if he's "undercover", and complains about stuff on his car to his visibibly police friends, that's just stupid.

Otoh, I don't know if there's anything explicitly illegal about putting your stuff on someone elses stuff on public property so long as you don't damage it, iirc private property isn't as well protected in the public realm.

The cop was a dick.
The OP shouldn't have put his tools on a random car but it's not the biggest of infractions and certainly did not warrent the cop's reaction.
Next time, use the sidewalk.

thanks for the responses, my knee is a tad sore but not a big deal i hope.
it was a big stroke of luck that i had the bolt with me. i have another
one on order in case this ever happens again. personally i was just a little shaken
up from flipping the bike and i saw a place to put my tools while i was
trying to figure out how to put the clamp back together.it was probably wrong
to put them on someones car but it was dark and late and it seemed like a good idea.
it sucked the most having to profously apologize to undercover cop driving a undercover taxi
so i wouldnt go to jail for vandalizing or whatever stupid charge they would make up.
however i made it home and live to fight another fight.

Being shaken up after the crash I'm sure had a lot to do with you not thinking and just putting your tools on the car.
