difference in these kryptonite chains?

i've got an older kryptonite nyc chain. i bought it about five years ago.

it's about 48" long, the links are more silver in color, have rougher welds, and each link is 2.5" long.

all my friends have newer chains which are about 36" long (i like that my longer chain can get around a pole and through through both my wheels), are gold in color, have smoothed out welds, and each link is 2" long.

i assume krypto just started using chains with a more refined spec and that mine is just as strong (right?), but why the change in link size and length?

Can you get one end link through the other, like tab A/slot B style where you could put the lock through just the one link and have it be locked? You can't on the newer ones. Also, are the links 6 sided or 4 sided?

I have one of the current ones (allegedly 3'3"), and I can get it around a bike rack or other small pole, through one wheel, and then put the two ends on the shackle of the micro-U lock and lock the other wheel's rim/tire inside the shackle as well. Not enough chain to do it just as a regular loop, and it's not going around a thick pole like that.

They started using shorter links because they're harder get stuff into them to pry or break them. I've got one of the newer chains- I don't know about security, but sure looks great wearing it around town. A real fashion accessory!!
