Riding bikes/fixies in Charleston?

How bike friendly is it there? I'm currently in school at Philly, but I may be going to school at Charleston in a year...

Is the bike scene there pretty much non-existent? Anyone know?

Bikes: highly modified specialized crossroads and GT hybrid (really a [formerly] 12-speed bmx cruiser, made before 'hybrid' took on its current meaning), as yet unmodified redline 925, couple of other projects

Are you going to College of Charleston? We started up critical mass here in september and for march's ride we had 70+ riders. The city itself it pretty small but I would say the bike "culture" is steadily growing. There are probably only 10-20 fixed gear riders, but sometimes that's a good thing (i.e. not too many stupid hipsters). In May my boyfriend and I are putting on a whole weekend of rides, races, and events - it should be pretty huge.

Haha, I think when I graduate I may be going to grad school in Philly...

I will be at the bike race/weekend, EJ, along with a few friends from savannah. You should post it on the rides a races thread on here, you know, get some people from out of town.

Awesome! Charleston misses you Carson! Are you going to bring Guy and Dakota? I made a post in there a few days ago.
I think we are going to get some flyers printed up soon - if I send some to you will you put them up around savannah?

I'm from Wilimington NC and have ridden bikes in Chucktown enough to know that it's "safe" as in bicycle theft, but Rednecks dont like people on bikes in the road. I've run into a lot of confrontations esp after midnight with drunk *******s starting **** with you... [keep in mind, this was me riding a cruiser with a coaster, not a fixie]

So, I yelled at some bike riders in Charleston sometime in March. I asked if they were riding for Critical Mass... they said no.

Was that any of you guys? I'm from Wisconsin. I was a ****ing TOURIST mother****er. It sucked. I liked your city, though.

There are a lot of people who get a little cocky while riding in critical mass. I'm sure what you saw was critical mass...it makes me wonder why someone said no. If you live here you hate tourists, sorry you experienced the wrath of some of the riders.

I don't know about that. I mean I don't want to deter anyone from Charleston but if you don't lock your bike up around here it WILL get jacked.
It's more like sorority and fraternity people drunk or sober who feel that bicycles are not real and they rule everything. We are trying to change that here.

Hey guys, lol my post from 11 months ago was still here. Anyway, it's confirmed, I'll be in Charleston for med school starting August.

Sad to leave Philly, but excited again to be where the weather is lovely and the beaches are close.

At this point I don't have a bike (I have that old Schwinn Continental but just found out the rear axle bent.. wtf). When I get down to Charleston I might buy a Windsor or Kilo TT (I think that black one looks sweet) to get back into it.

Hey missej, what year are you graduating (CofC?)?

My father lived on Folly Beach about 20 years ago. Man, I loved it down there as a kid when me and my bro would spend the summer with him. If I ever leave this area, I'd seriously consider trying to find a place down that way.

Congrats, OP, should be a great environment for med school. MUSC?

Yep MUSC, thanks! I'll be taking out some loans each year so I think I can spare several hundred to buy a fixie.

Congrats! Well, just to let you know, if you want to save some $$ there are lots of bikes that are liberating material that would make great fixies.

Have any of you seen that girl ride by on the neon green track frame with green deep v's/green tires, etc.

'Cause holy crap that is the greenest bike I have ever seen.

edit: I'll be riding around on an old Geoffrey Butler road bike for the next two weeks. Holla if ya see me.

I'll be riding a Steamroller in CHS until mid-August. Seems pretty bike-friendly to me.
