best city rain jacket evar?!
 

Like so many of you, I'm a big pansy when it comes to the rain. While I don't want to get wet, I also don't want to show up at all disgusting after having ridden to work inside a plastic bag.

It's a ****ing short sleeve rain jacket! Waterproof, breathable, packable, <$100.

It's made by nike and I found it at the *ahem* ....golf pro shop. I challenge you to find some $800 rapha whatever that tops this shiz.

ehhh, hot enough for short sleeves and my jersey will dry fast enough :D looks like a sweatbag for any cycling that raises your heart rate.

-That look like it would flap in the wind alot. Which would probably lead to the sleeves bunching up and your whole side getting soaked.

-I am convinced "truly waterproof" + "breathable" = "unaffordable". especially for something I am likely to crash in and duct tape anyway. So my gues iss that after ten or fifteen minutes of real rain this would be soaked through even if the sleeves do prove worthwhile.

-Have you ridden in it yet? If not you probably should have waited to post until you had.

I think I'll stick with $50 cycling specific non-breathable rain gear for now. Yeah I sweat alot but the pit zips help some and at least I'm not soaked in ten minutes.

I've never been able to wear a rain jacket in the warm months, cept in Houston when there is a downpour, sometimes everyday in the summer for a stretch. Then I'd slip on a rain jacket unzipped because there is such a thing as too wet in a professional setting. Not working, you couldn't pay me to wear a rain jacket of any sort in warm weather.

I took it for a spin today. I didn't really get rained on, but if I had - HO HO - I was READY for it. It's a little flappy, but for around town, no big deal. It gets a pretty good breaze up the arm without bunching. It's on the waterproof end of the waterproof <--> breathable lifeline excersize, so I think it'll serve it's purpose.

not bad. i dig the american apparel nylon jacket. less than $50 and very compact. plus, made in america

true that but the nylon isn't, they're on the slippery slope. I really dig that they start with raw fiber for their cotton shirts. So few textiles are made in North America anymore:(

Why are windbreakers even being discussed on a thread about <b>rain</b> gear.

Because if you don't want to spring for the $$$ for goretex, your options are nonbreathable coated stuff or cheap windbreakers, possibly sprayed down with waterproofing.

Oh yeah, and I actually think the short sleeve rain jacket isn't a bad idea, but that thing looks like it was made for runners. I'd be all over something like that if it had a jersey-style sleeve and a closer fit.

well, i live in seattle where it does rain every once in a while, and this jacket got me through the rainy season just fine.

of course it never really rains SUPER hard, but it rains a lot

If you're that worried about getting wet, probably better off just taking off your 'dry cloths' and putting them in a bag and ride in whatever till you get where you're goin and then change in the bathroom. Depends of the situation, but thats what I usually do.

Actually, I'm more worried about my pants or shorts getting wet. Nothing worse then soaking wet pants and nothing to change into.

Spendy, but its truly the best, I don't know if you can get them in the US

here is a little secret i picked up on years ago. for one time only
go to either eddie bauer or eastern mountain sports. once there
buy their raincoat of whatever it is you need. both of these companies
offer a "guaurentee for life". i have with eddie bauer for example
bought a pair of sunglasses and broke them 4 times. each time
taking them to a store with no reciept and walking out with a new pair.
once i had a down vest that had a hole in it after two years of use.
i took it in and it was out of stock so they told me i could get any coat in
the store for free. at eastern mountain sports i bought a gore tex raincoat.
i used if for 3 years and it stoped being waterproof. i took it in with no reciept
and traded it for a brand new one. welcome to the exciting world of taking advantage
of giant corporations.

I don't feel bad about abusing lifetime normal wear and tear warranties (I think I went through 5 jansport backpacks from like '89 to '00, even though you're not really supposed to take them caving or punt them down talus slopes), but somehow I feel like when I go down because I hit a pothole I know about on a street I ride 2-3 times a day with an oversized load of master cylinders in the bag and a few already stashed in the hold, REI doesn't owe me new goretex.

but they can totally afford it right?? so why not?

I could "afford" to have my crappy saddle on my beater stolen, but I kind of appreciate it when I come back to the bike and it's still there. Just sayin'.

I don't think EMS is a "giant corporation." And you're not taking advantage of anything, except the Lifetime Guarantee that they gave you when you bought the jacket. Keep fightin' the good fight though. . . .
