Which Web Host?

I will no longer be able to host IP's myself, so sometime soon
I'll need to find a host. Ideally it would be able to
run php/mysql and include tons of storage. Oh ya, and cheap!
Who do you use?

absntr 06-26-06 10:22 AM

http://www.dreamhost.com

http://www.mediatemple.net

http://www.textdrive.com

I use all three for various projects and clients.

Thanks Naz, I was hoping you'd chime in!

+1 for mediatemple, but it can get a little pricey depending on what you need from them.

bny 06-26-06 02:23 PM

Not that I know much about this but Nearly Free Speech.net is really cheap, at least for my uses, and they've got an interesting system.

onetwentyeight 06-26-06 02:29 PM

another vote for MT.

After several clunkers, I finally settled on http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/index.php

They seem to have some expertise in house, whereas the others just ran off the shelf systems and network access, and didn't have a clue if a special need or question arose.

monkey: drop me a line if you would like to talk to the guys who do my hosting (http://nsihosting.com). They own their own racks, very cheap, excellent support, and they will do custom installs/work if needs be. Its great having the root-owners on AIM 24/7 incase something goes wrong, you need a patch/upgrade installed, etc

piratelove 06-26-06 02:56 PM

I use site5.com, and it's pretty kickass.. nice prices too imo.

spud 06-26-06 03:11 PM

i use pair.com for some of my work, and my own server for the a lot of the rest. depending on the space requirements, i might be able to help you out. send me a PM.

skelly 06-26-06 03:32 PM

I use mediatemple. 24 hour support, they're always upgrading the service, dependable...

evanyc 06-26-06 03:49 PM

a friend runs logjamming.com.

brunning 06-26-06 03:59 PM

dreamhost is the best web host i've ever used.

been using them for about 6 years for personal and business stuff. they offer almost everything one could ever want, and up your storage and bandwidth by a certain amount ever week. good stuff.

absntr 06-26-06 04:38 PM

Evan -- damn, forgot Loren still ran that site.

evanyc 06-26-06 04:47 PM

loren actually got bought out. it's still josh (lorens partner/killoggs dude) and two other guys. it's getting pretty pro now i guess. josh actually was bought out too, then bought controlling stake in the company that bought him and loren out. i dont get it all. it's still basically run by 3 punk dudes though.

Cari.net is running some crazy deals on dedicated, if you're into that kind of thing.

for $60/mo you get: 3.0ghz Celeron D 64, 1gb ram, 160gb sata, 1200gb b/w, fedora core

kyledr 06-26-06 07:12 PM

godaddy.com is cheap and has tons of transfer/space and no setup fee. Downside is the support you have to wait like 10-15 minutes for. I wouldn't need support so I'm okay with that if I get everything I could ever want for $4 a month or something stupid like that.

i've got godaddy, it's cheap, but over all kind of so-so. the godaddy website itself is craptastically clumsy, which makes it a pain to get to the "control panel" for an account. as for the service itself, it can be pretty slow.

sloppy robot 06-26-06 09:28 PM

ive been using www.cedant.com alot.. i love that its really easy to get someone one the phone, and everythign works smoothly and the bandwidth is unlimited on my accounts

simple312 06-27-06 09:15 AM

im using midphase they are in chicago. helpful support and good deals - at least complete overkill for me. my needs are pretty basic.
marc (marklesparkle) i think also used dreamhost
i think we tried to move a site from godaddy and they would not release the domain or something to keep it from moving to the new host, also midphase.

Jermsy 06-27-06 04:41 PM

Doteasy.

$25/year for a domain name, 100mb storage, 1gb monthly traffic
or
$10/month for a domain name, 20gb storage, unmetered monthly traffic <-- what I have

absntr 06-27-06 04:50 PM

Don't use doteasy. I had them for a while and used them for two clients. Hell. One of my domains is stuck there and two of my domains I lost because they didn't unlock them in time, eventhough they said they would. Bad news. Servers went up and down a bit too often for my liking too.

Based in Canada so tech support is a bit iffy at times.
