cloth grip tape??
I found a tutorial on how to wrap your bar tape with two colors of tape with a diamond pattern. To do this, you need cloth bar tape because its thinner. Where can I find some?
|
most bike shops should carry them. velox or tressostar are common. viva is my favorite.
|
Anywhere.
Ebay is a great source too. Search for Velox Cloth Bar Tape. |
Many people don't like cloth tape because it doesn't offer sufficient (read: any) padding.
I love it because I dig the look and since I always wear gloves, the padding is a non-issue for me. |
I've looked at local bike shops here and they only carry fancy bar tape that starts at about 15$ and goe sup accordingly.
Right now I have two boxes of Cateye cotton tape sitting on my couch. I get it at a nonprofit for 2$ a roll. That difference is about a week and a half of food (yeah I excel the art of eating cheap but eating hearty). anyway the drawback is that they only stock black; black works with everything but sometimes I wanna get some color in. I get pins-and-needles in my arms if I am riding a long distance (say at least 25miles) or if I have been doing some hard sprinting in traffic. So, I have no answer for you except "cateye". And believe me, I've done some online searching but to no avail. If anyone can link me to an online resource with Cateye bar tape, I will greatly appreciate. |
ps: Let me know how that Harelquin pattern works out. I am thinking about trying it on my yet-to-be-built-up frame.. if I can find a suitable green.
|
The cateye stuff is more commonly used for rim lining... I can't remember what the package says, but it can be used for either purpose. Although that might not help you for colors.
Also, if you don't wear gloves, be prepared for massive calluses. I stuck it out for a month or two before I threw in the towel and went for cork tape. |
I dont even have the frame yet! haha. I have a nice road bike but I'm not converting that. If I ever do it or even find a frame that doesnt cost a fortune, I'll post pics.

I bought my Phil Wood BB tool from them. Arrived in about 2-3 days. And then a couple days later, another one showed up. Nice shop in my book. |
Harris, and Jitensha both sell various colors. If you are in the Detroit area Continental bike shop in Hazel Park has rolls of red tape enough to cover a whole set of bars for $2 with chromed steel plugs.

everyone should be riding with gloves. they damper the vibrations of ****ty pavement and make hands happy, plus if you fall you wont scrape the **** out of your palms.
|
I'd probably ride with some, if I had some.
Refer me a light minimal glove intended for hot summer weather? sweat absorbing material is a plus. |
you can find NOS tioga cloth wrap in some colors (i have a bunch of pink)
hockey tape and the tape that people use for making venetian blinds also works and both are available in all sorts of colors. somewhat related, i also have my jackson's bullhorns wrapped with tennis racket wrap. |

Also very nice. I personally prefer the full fingered, but you can't go wrong with either. |
my pearl izumi glove started unraveling after about 3-4 months, which is why i switched to fox. They were comfy tho, i liked the little gel padding. i also prefer full fingered.

If I had $150 to burn, I'd be all over a pair of Rapha gloves.
The finger tips of my PIs are just starting to wear thin. It'll be a sad day. |
my friend ordered a pair of them, and when i tried them on they didnt fit me well. everything ive read says they're awesome gloves but they just dont fit everyone. thats life i guess.
|
you can get the velox tape from donpatrol on ebay for 6 bucks with free shipping. i got some in the mail today and it is a-ok.

Also don't forget the added benefit of the wipe patch on gloves. |

My first fixed gear had tennis racket wrap on the bars, which was replaced with some super cushy stuff after I crashed it and scuffed it up...Now I have cloth tape on my new bike and it starts sucking after an hour or so; I'm definitely getting gloves come next paycheck...
