un-72 with phil's french cups is the way to go if you are opposed to loose bearing, cup and spindle type affairs. you can find the un-72s on ebay all of the time.

one of my french bikes has un-72 with phil cups, one has phil cartridge with phil cups, and, also, i have sugino french threaded cups that i have run with a sugino 75 spindle.

if you need help with any particulars, let me know and i'll see what i can do.

Thanks for the replies. I thinking this is all for nothing, because I can't get the driveside cup out. Not really sure if a $5.00 bike from a garage sale is worth all this trouble.

It shouldn't be that hard... have you tried the home-made tool Sheldon recommends in this article:

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tooltips/bbcups.html

I used it and it works like a charm.

I have looked at that site a bunch of times and now I understand what that tool does.

Thanks for the tip.

Just a thought, you are turning the fixed cup the right (ie. wrong) way, right? There was a great thread that answered about every french issue but my search function ain't workin'.

Yeah, I had to read it about 10 times, and then actually try and build it before I finally wrapped my feeble mind around the concept. It is so simple it's painful now.
