If I had to buy one, what should it be? Also...Kryptonite or OnGuard?

kyroptonite u-lock and a length of hardware store chain (with a flat padlock) will be all you ever need.

I use u-lock for short lock ups or in my view, for long or all day lock up, mini-u and chain.
