I have already registered mybikelane.com and am well under way into some development (gave me a good opportunity to do some web dev work on the side as well). I hope to launch a pretty rough version of the site w/in the next 2 to 3 weeks, though my schedule is hardly set in stone given I am working on this in the evenings and on weekends, and only then when I am willing to sit inside at a computer (much more fun to be out on the bike). In any rate, I am building: - multiple city sites: nyc.mybikelane.com, sf.mybikelane.com, etc. (will launch w/ a limited set and add more as demand calls for) that all live under the main www.mybikelane.com - ability for members to upload a photo, description, location (crosstreets), city, and license plate of offending vehicle to the site - ability to see a nice google or yahoo map of where violations have occurred - ability to see a map and list of infractions by a given license plate - eventually, I would like to add in ability to immediately kick off a complaint to: police, FedEx/UPS/DHL/etc (to ***** about their drivers), MTA, etc I have already started taking pictures of cars/trucks/buses/cops parked in the bikelane, and let me tell you, nothing moves them out of the way faster than a biker taking a picture of their car parked illegally. When I ask people to move, they cuss me. When I take their picture, they take off (most of the time). Anyhow, if anyone has some web design experience and wants to help me out w/ this, I would love to hear from you (PM me). I want this to be a free resource to photo-document the BS we have to put up w/ in commuting/biking in the city. greg |
"Matthew, isn't the Brooklyn Bridge a social program not strictly called for in the constitution? What the **** are you doing riding on it?"
I don't think jmgorman made class that day. What about taxation only for the preservation of individual rights confuses you? The Bridge, as well as the roads and a lot of New York's crumbling infrastructure is the result of government spending (although not quite social programs) and I don't know if you have looked around lately but it hasn't been working out so well for the citizen. Still, quite a good arguement...since i have an originalist view on rights on shouldn't be able to live in the city corrupted by it. "What the *** am I doing riding on it?" It is my tax dollars that paid for it, |

but, if the government is responding to the market, shouldn't they aim to please the bulk of the consumers (drivers and pedestrians) at the expense of the cyclists who don't contribute nearly as much money to the market? seems to be what they are doing here, just responding to the market. i of course don't support this, just as i don't support a free market.

I was there yesterday but didn't get pulled off. guess I'm not going into the city today. I've got to disagree with you there, wangstarr. Errrr...I guess I mean "-1". The Brooklyn Bridge is a tourist destination. AND a major pedestrian route between Brooklyn & Manhattan. You should expect people to be jumping out in front of you. Being indignant about it makes about as much sense as saying that people shouldn't be walking in Central Park while we're riding, either. Everyone knows not to take the Brooklyn Bridge because of the amount of pedestrian traffic on there. But if you're forced to, there's no sense in yelling at anyone that's using it for what it's there for. It's this sense of weird entitlement that doesn't help our image too much, and makes it easy for the cops to treat us like dirt. We're a nuisance. Having said that, I'm gonna go tear up the streets of Chicago. |

Welp, I guess it's time to stop using that bridge. I woulda taken it this morning but that article confused me a little about the locations involved. Used to ride that damned thing every morning... |
took a couple of pics yesterday on 2nd ave [heading south bet 10th-4th streets] of courteous drivers who decided to park in the bike lane. also got some nice shots of cars that decided to use it as a turning lane, but werent in fact turning b/c they were stopped at a red light. didnt get all of them b/c the light changed while i was taking pics - there were like 3 or 4 of them in a row. didnt manage to get a shot of the a**hole who decided the bike lane was not only his lane, but he was going to gun it and drive nice and recklessly while staying ONLY in the bike lane. mid sized sedan, texas plates, couldnt get more detail b/c he was way ahead of me. somewhere around 6th st/2nd ave. i'll be looking out for this fool again.

That sucks, but good you got pics. Make sure, if possible, you get a pic of the license plate number. There was some construction truck on the bike path of the QB bridge this morning, during rush, and was taking up all but about 15 inches on one side of the bridge. I wonder if it was really neccessary to do that cleaning and create an unsafe situation during rush hour.
|
yep. i'm getting wider shots of the car in the bike lane, then pulling up closer to try & get the detail of the plate if possible.

I only feel entitled to the bike path part of the bridge thats meant for me to go on without having to constantly watch for clueless pedestrians and pedestrians who feel entitled to the entire bridge as their own regardless of the clear, bright, yellow markings. |

I try not to take that bridge because it's dangerous and frustrating but its also the most direct route for me to get into the city after work. I yell to get them to move out of the bike lane so I can get past.
then again, i guess the darwin awards exist for a pretty good reason. |

i have been a little taken aback at some of the responses of bikers to my blog. i always assumed that the biking community had a very pro-freedom, almost anarchistic attitude that was very pro-free market, and wanting the government out of our lives--not more government. But i think that the idea to take pics that some on this board are proposing is great....keep me posted of your progress and let me know if you need help in any way. |

Huh. Not having seen this article, I went across the BB twice yesterday (both ways, descending at speed) and didn't hear a peep. Maybe because it was 11 pm when I was coming back into BK.
|
good point.
when i mention the seperation of church and state i mena how it should be--not how it is. |

Hi,
I do freelance writing for various city newpapers and may be interested in doing an article on the growing tensions between cyclists and city officials and anyone who has been ticketed or fined recently on the Brooklyn Bridge in addition to information on the ideas being floated around this site on taking pics and posting them online . please contact me at your convience. thanks, matthew lysiak 718-954-2777 |
i rode over the brooklyn bridge yesterday and saw those signs for the first time ever. seriously, do they expect people to look up there when riding a bike?
but yeah, the end of that path sucks and i've almost gotten in a fist fight with some dickhead who just bomb ed straight off the path and almost steamrolled me. |

haha sounds like my interaction with some cops a few weeks ago. they busted up this party we were having in a state park, at least 3 miles from anyone else, for which we had paid for the cabins and had an ABC liscense that allowed us to have kegs. they brought drug dogs out and had everyone sitting on the ground while they searched cabins cause the park rangers "were nervous about us." plus, this particular event was called "Double Vision Quest" and had a myspace page that jokingly promised "dragons, unicorns, and all the weed that you can smoke." the cops had the printed out myspace page with them!
i got tired of sitting down after about a minute and stood up and started chatting with the cops about how ridiculous is was that they had 7 cruisers in the middle of the woods for a buncha drunk kids 3 miles from the rest of humanity, who rented cabins specifically so no one would drink and drive. "says all the weed you can smoke right here." "yeah, it also says dragons and unicorns! and i'm pretty sure there's a winky emoticon afterwards." |

haha yeah, definitely don't put incriminating info on your myspace page, or make your profile private.
