a question about clips...
 

did a search & didnt find a thread that exactly addresses the question i have...

ive been riding with just the stock [platform?] pedals that originally came on the bike [the bike is a mid-80's nishiki sport] & i have been keeping my rpm's down for safety's sake. obviously, this is not the wisest move and i have to make the move to clips.
the reflectors are not screwed into the pedals, but when i looked at the inside there are 2 holes, about an inch or so apart, that i think it might be possible to install clips in. i tried doing some searches online, but not being too familiar with the terminology i wasnt exactly sure what to look for. the closest thing i found to what i assume i could install on these pedals was a set of nashbar clips:

are these the type of clips that can be mounted to stock pedals, or at this point, would it be wiser for me to swap out the pedals entirely? i do eventually want to re-gear the bike, install a new chainring, etc, but not just yet.
also, i know people will make the case, but i'm not really comfortable with the idea of going clipless at this point.
any help?

try track pedals with steel cages and leather straps. maybe you can find some shimano 600's on ebay. these pedals are designed for fixed gear track riding.

I got a pair of 600's if you want them for cheap. You will need to replace one clip. I got some white straps as well. Otherwise, the MKS sylvans do a pretty good job.

i've got an extra pair of small-medium steel clips for the 600's. if you are smaller than a 10, or like your foot placement shallow, they will work fine. i think these pedals are ideal- low ground clearance for cornering, and super strong. they also have a cleat interface if you have your coach to lock you in at the track...

yeah, you're definitly gonna wanna get rid of those clunky platforms. if you don't want to go with the whole cage / strap thing i have an extra pair of mks mini-toe clips. they're strapless, and they only cover the toe of your foot, great for getting in and out of quick, but still hold your feet tight.

powergrips all the way. simple, cheap, and in my opinion more effective than most toe clips. some argue that the silver powergrip logo annoys them-- to that i say flip the strap for an all black strap. I'll try and get ya some pictures of them on later tonight

+1 to powergrips working great, but I have very little experience with clips + straps, so I can't really compare them.

powergrips do work great. my wellgo pedals actually have the powergrip logo on the sides. i was not dissapointed when i tried them out, but my foot is too wide for them and the side of the strap rubbed between my crank arm and shoe and eventually snapped.

yeah I have to wear chucks or vans or some narrow equivilent to not rub. I actually just blew a strap about a month ago, but i consider that decent life considering i ride everyday.

another downside to them that I jsut remembered is that they will blowout your shoes-- especially if they are think like chucks or vans. i still love them though

I like the clips/straps, cause I use my road shoes with cleats at the track and PP.

i was thinking it might be nice to have that option b/c i'd def like to get on a track at some point.
i'm about a size 10 1/2; aside from having to replace one of the clips [i assume this is just a special order away?] would those 600's be about the right size for me?

I am a 9 1/2-10 and you can adjust the clips about 1/2". I don't have the cleats, but you can get them online and ebay.

PowerGrips on a FG?

if you get the pedals from shishi, i'll trade you my extra clips for a cog. my 17 is a wee bit too small for the big hills.

In some ways, they make more sense than clips and straps for street FG - they tighten and loosen based on the angle of your foot so you can get a very positive connection to the pedals without tightening/loosening the straps (although it's not like you could, you adjust them with a wrench).

When your straps are tight enough to really attach your feet to the pedals, AFAIK, you shouldn't be able to take your feet off without bending down and loosening the straps. Otherwise you can just ride with loose straps which is also okay, but still imperfect in its own ways.


SPD's were not invented in a vacuum.

Exactly they are designed for riding on a track with cycling shoes and cleats not riding around town in soft soled shoes. If you are talking about the early 90's 600's wihtout real cages I can't think of any worse(non-clipless) pedal for riding around town(and these aren't even track pedals)
