or an accident between a cyclist and a car (or a city tow truck for that matter?). Needs to be understood that cyclists are more often the victims of traffic violations resulting in damage/injury than the perpatrators

and its too bad too. didn't used to be that way. when I moved here 26 years ago NYPD were pretty helpful and seemed to be focused on serious crime. To me the change came in the late '80's with the phrase "Quality of Life"

visitordesign 08-03-06 08:37 AM

the tompkins riot was the beginning of the end.

shishi 08-03-06 08:40 AM

I always thought it was "Do the right thing" that led to our demise.

genericbikedude 08-03-06 08:45 AM

I will be at the hearing. If I have time, I'll get arrested at critical mass a few days later. I encourage others to do the same.

Indeed.
that was the summer of '88 and I was standing in front of Ray's with an ice coffee in my hand when the bottles flew. "Quality of Life" was the response.

i missed that one, but was around the following fall [nov 89, i guess] when they started burning down the fences.
good times.

i dig you as a person generic and all my other times up friends but i see no
point in getting myself arrested. its not gonna change a damn thing and good
luck ever say getting a loan, govermant job,or any other job and having
to explain why you have a criminal record. though when the law is changed
i will probably be arrested at some point anyways but at least it wont be
on purpose.

genericbikedude 08-03-06 02:44 PM

I imagine that it will just be a misdemeanor?? Those dont matter for your record, do they?

shishi 08-03-06 03:04 PM

It all matters these days, unfortunate, yes, but also the truth.

visitordesign 08-03-06 03:46 PM

has anyone considered interviewing roadies in the parks and commuters and giving their responses to the rule change as testimony? it might be better to hear disembodied voices than it is to just know that there are a bunch of letters in the public record with words that were never heard by many people. it could make for funny testimony in what i imagine will be an exercise in redundancy.

sabretech2001 08-03-06 04:03 PM

After this reg goes into effect, someone's gonna hafta film all those groups who otherwise fall into the above parameters not getting ticketed/harassed/etc.

Even though it'll be a huge PITA to arrange it, the NYPD just hung a big 'ol 'Kick Me' sign on their collective @sses. TIme to shop for new boots.

Can't do that in New York. Only 18 states have that, and New York isn't one of them.

Still, talk about a raw deal.

yeah, try not to get arrested. plus, parading w/o a permit is only a violation, and the DAs have always offered ACDs to arrestees (which supposedly wipe the offense off your record after 6 months). as a violation, it's on par with a traffic offense, like speeding for instance, so the long term consequences are nil.

this is a tool to take people from the streets and put them in jail for a night. the process, essentially, is the punishment.

it would be a good idea to clear out any old warrants, though, as you'll potentially stay much longer if you're ticketed or arrested with any outstanding.

genericbikedude 08-04-06 11:21 AM

I suppose that it is a question of tactics.

Good ol' civil disobedience getting arrested has its place when there are a LOT of people doing so, and making a stink. If there are fewer, then TIMES UP! (austin, or someone else?) is probably right. Nobody would notice and it would just be a personal PITA

do they still feel entitled to arrest people for violations? man... judges must hate them so much.

re: those nyc bike maps - was looking at the 2006 edition last night and there are several bridges with word bubbles connected to them that say 'dismount bike and walk', but there isnt one for the bklyn bridge that i could find. and yet people are getting ticketed for not doing this. shouldnt that have been printed on the '06 edition if it was a regulation to be enforced?

i dont have the map on me right now, but i only recall seeing this on things like the 9th st bridge heading towards red hook, and the pulaski connecting greenpoint to lic.
i was just curious about the discrepancy, or if something changed in the interim.

The Brooklyn thing is a sign at the end of the bike/ped lane at Tillary. The rule is only for riders coming off the bridge and is up high above the path, a place you are not looking as you slow down and avoid peds walking on the bike side. You can ride the Brooklyn, you just can't ride the last 100 ft of the Brooklyn bound path.
