You haven't worked in a bike shop have you? I pulled these out of an Astabula crank a few years ago. People can and will break anything.

Just came back from Burning man where there are about 50 thousand Huffy Cranbrooks with Ashtabula cranks.

No doubt the bearings can fail. At our bike repair station we got 7 in one day with the bearings or the cages destroyed by rust. Unscrew the lock ring and they just fell out. The cage was nothing more than dust. Still That crank assembly is tough . All you need is an new set of bearings and it is back together in minutes. Even if the cages are gone the bearings can usually be salvaged and glued in individually with lithium grease and the whole thing buttoned back up.

Stone age tech is sometimes the best. These are not bicycles they are transportation modules.
