screw through rim - holy ****

on my way home from work today i got the most insane flat ever.

i was riding through a not-too-great stretch of road, and, all of a sudden, i heard a really hollow-sounding metallic "plop" sort of noise. it was followed, on each rotation of the rear wheel, by a series of scraping sounds. i quickly realized that the tire was flat as ****, so i pulled over, only to see that my tire was literally pressed flat and screwed against the rim. i couldn't pull it out by hand, so i had to bust out my screwdriver. i kept unscrewing until i got a 1.5" (probably more like 1.75") screw out of the damn thing. the thing had gone straight in. it seemed a screw could have gone that deep, especially given how much it compressed the tire. there was no more than ~1/4-1/2" between where the head was and the rim seat. when i got home, i pulled out the tube, which it had gone straight through, and then peeled back the rim tape to reveal a ****ing hole in the rim. the ****ing screw punctured a hole in the rim. it was almost perfectly circular. i held it up to the light and could see that the screw had scraped the very bottom (tip) of the "v" section of the deep v rim. i guess i'm ****ing lucky that it was a deep rim and not my aeroheads or open pros. it would have gone out the side or bottom. anyhow, just so you believe me, here is a picture:

oh, and the tires were gatorskins lined with ****ing slime strips. somehow the screw managed to go around the side of the slime strip. not that it would have helped.

That's amazing. You still planning on riding that?

shants 08-08-06 09:52 PM

shants 08-08-06 09:53 PM

obligatory "you got screwed" comment.

maybe someone drilled a screw into your wheel while it was locked up

666pack 08-08-06 10:01 PM

mount that screw somewhere on your bike or keep it in your pocket. you two were meant to meet.

It's happened to me, too. Same thing, but through an open pro.

But, I have no proof. So...
