no seriously spend 500 for a reload and 4 g's on a whip and trust someone else's opinion on what you should ride. yes they still make you look fat. pink furry belts with glitter rainbow spikes are the new white belt. now we can hang, finally...

I went riding with a bunch of guys this morning who fit the description of "freds." I was the youngest, most likely, at 44. They all had very nice bikes that -- Treks with great big model numbers, bikes that were all carbon or even titanium. I figured it would be a nice 18-19 mph spin.

And they all nearly shreded my sorry butt. Came close to being dropped a few times. 21-23 mph average (7 in a paceline) BTW, I wasn't on my fixie.

The funny thing is that if you take the road cycling community and remove all the Freds and OCP's, there really isn't anyone left.

A rider who...
... wears a Camelback and mountain bike shoes on a road bike.

... doesn't shave his legs.

... wears a rear-view mirror on his helmet.

... uses a seat-post bag instead of just throwing everything in his jersey pockets.

...etc.

Fred is a clueless guy who still has the dork disk and reflectors on his Trek, and he's wearing a Discovery kit. He also has a super-relaxed position on the bike, and hairy legs.

OCP means obsessive compulsive poseur. This is the guy with the $8k bike who rides to the Starbucks. His tires match his bar tape and seat ALWAYS, and the tires aren't black. Plenty of OCP's on fixies too.

The best I can figure the related roadie/ssfg terms are:

Fred = Posenger
OCP = Hipster

Or vice versa.

Wouldn't it be the other way round?

that's OK, the roadies can't seem to keep them straight either.

Here's a better definition, from the thread in question:

OCP = obsessive compulsive poseur. Where a Fred doesn't care what he looks like, an OCP cares only what he looks like.

We should start purposely taking on the guise of Fred. It would be like a new anti-fashion statement.

What would be the ultimate and most immediately identifiable Fred accessory? How about a chainguard on my roadbike? Or even a kickstand!? Ha.

If a Fred is a cyclist who just rides, and doesn't care what he looks like, shouldn't we all aspire to be a bit more like Fred? I admit I'll never achieve true fredness under that definition, because I do care what my bikes look like, and what I look like riding them. Under some of the looser definitions presented in that thread I would certainly qualify though. For instance for completing a century ride while wearing a cotton T-shirt. Gasp I know what a fashion faux pas!
