Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

48 x 15 or 49 x 15 (depending on the bike I'm riding that day)

I do my 10 mile commute in 27-33 minutes. My record is 25, but I had no backpack, lock or any extra weight at all that day.

73ish on my commute bike (hilly route), 70 on a city bike - it is fun to accelerate faster than cars, despite them trying hard and I am not too worried about losing 4% of the top speed.

39 x 14 on a 23mm tire. 73.3 GI.

I am looking to move up though, possibly 48 x 16 b/c I have both cog and chainring laying around. That would be 78.9. We'll see if it is too much of a jump.

I'm happiest in the mid 60's-low 70's. 68 is just about perfect.

42x17 free
46x17/46x18 fixed
44x16 (soon to be 44x17) fixed

main bike: 47 x 19 with 165mm cranks = 65 gear inches according to sheldon. purposely low to force myself to spin, and as an unintended consequence its truly a joy to ride. beater is about 81 gi. not nearly as fun...

42 x 16 on 700c/25mm = 69 g.i. according to Sheldon's calculator. It's probably lower than what most of my fellow flatlanders ride, but I'm looking forward to an improved spin next spring.

Another 69er here. My commute rises 360 m over about 7 km so it's nice going up and spinny going down. I do touch the front brake on the descent, but I'm hoping to improve my spin to the point where it's not necessary anymore.

76.5 looks like. Seems about right. I never seem to max out my speed.

Out of curiosity, what's the typical range for a fully geared road bike?

For a compact double with a 50t/39t chainrings, and a 12-27t cassette, it goes from 38 gear inches to 109.5. Almost makes you want to start coasting... almost.

approx 75" with a 172.5mm crank on clincher rims and 70" on tubular wheelset, same cranks. I prefer the 75 for going down hills and not having to touch the brakes.
For metro DC MD, which has it's share of short hill, repeated many times over, the 75 works fine. For those of you who are lucky enough to have REAL climbs 70" or even slightly lower might be better. Gerry

46/17 ~ 73.1"

165mm cranks; Fairly hilly, as I'm near Seattle.
