There are lots of complete steel SS mtb's at or just below that price range. Why the Surly? They haven't changed geo on that bike in years and it's not the lightest. (Or have they?) Just wondering.

Plenty to look at there, for sure.

i really enjoy the versatility of the karate monkey, ya know? i like what surly is all about as a company. down to earth dudes that enjoy riding, beer, and wool. karate monkey...buy it complete as a ss, but you have the options to run it geared, rigid or suspended, v brakes or disk, 26 or 29"
i dont know, weight isnt an issue and the options are great in the long run. i honestly just miss riding trails.

Just read the entry on the Surly Blog about this.
"The KM and Big Dummy will be added as complete bikes (the KM as rigid single speed in both red and black), both utilizing our fine Mr. Whirly crankset."
Jeebus. Well, I guess I know what my bike purchase will be in '09.

They're suppose to change the geometry?

I'm also building a 29er karate monkey fixed gear bike, it's not going to be a mountain bike though, simply an urban/road bike with bullhorns and 28x2.4 slicks
What's yours alfiegee?

Not fixed, but I have some Salsa Delgago Cross. they have the Delgado disc, or Delgado race which don't have machined sidewalls and are pretty sweet. They are decently narrow, you could probably put 1.5in on them.

Tangential, but the reason why I ask is I am trying to turn my commuter into a fixed gear via the W.I. ENO hub. There is a local guy selling a ENO + Deep V and I am trying to rationalize that for my needs with a 700x35c+ tire.

Why would they change the geometry? Geometry isn't a fashion thing. BTW, they gave the downtube more clearance in 2007 for suspension forks that came out after the Monkey first hit the market.
Salsa Delgado Cross
Velocity Blunt
Sun CR18
W/ the Mr. Whirly crank I'm sure the price will be a bit more than other similar steel framed complete SS bikes, but those cranks look nice and give you a lot of options.

I like the Blunts and have some Halo Freedom Discs on my Monocog 29er. 2.35" Schwalbe big apples make my bike feel like a tall bike.

How does a disc brake work with the track ends? is the caliper mount adjustable or do you just have to make sure your chain is the correct length to "center" the disc in the caliper?

I run a Delgado Cross on the front of my Steamroller with a 1.75" tire on it (non-stock fork). It's amazing.

I put together a fixed gear Karate Monkey as my winter bike.
I have found over the past few winters that anything that CAN freeze solid WILL.
I ride this bike sometimes in the summer with Schwalbe Big Apple (3.25") tires, and in the winter with Nokian 294 studded tires.
What a hoot.
I love it.
