Does NYC remove chains from posts?
Every night I leave my kryponite chain locked to a light post. This morning when i got to work the chain was gone. Is is possible that the city might have removed it? yesterday someone stapled some signs for a club on the same post and this morning they are also gone. If the city did remove it, is it possible to get it back from them? Maybe they keep it at location to be claimed. any info is appreciated.

if they removed it i imagine they just tossed it.

Considering they probably cut it loose, I doubt you'd want it back.

I called 311 they told me that the nypd would be in charge of doing that. so i called the area precinct and they told me there is "peddler" department in their precinct that does that sort of thing. they said that they hold the property until someone claims it. i have my fingers crossed that i can get my chain back hopefully.

that sucks.
for around 6 months, i left my lock out on 18th street from M-F, and then took it home on weekends. beats commuting with 8 lbs of lock every day. i guess i got lucky. |
I have left my lock and chain locked around the same light post in midtown for 3 years now with out anyone messing with it. But now you have me paranoid, so maybe I will start lugging that monster home everynight.

the precinct says they didn't remove any lock. so most likely some bastard stole it. i'm pissed.

I was so bummed when I first heard that the NYC chain was cut... I was hoping that it actually was someone thief proof. Nope. On top of that, the $3000 insurance thing from kryptonite seems kind of lame because you would need receipts and all that for the bike... I've been paying a lot for individual bike parts on my current ride (as most people on here probably do as opposed to buying a whole bike in a shop), but I doubt they'd reimburse me for everything.

I have been leaving my chain locked outside my work everyday for like 3 years now.

someone stealing your chain seems very random and pointless. you sure you didn't accidently leave it unlocked?

If the chain is locked at the two ends, you can probably cut the two ends off and be left with a decent length chain. With chains retailing at about $50, it is no shock that scumbags are stealing them given how they steal things of much lesser value. |
the kryptonite chain is nearly impossible to break. its easier to break/pick the lock. I had a beefy american lock. I see kryptonite chains for sale on graigslist all the time usually its just the chain. I'm sure its an easy way to make $30~$40. I'm going to see a chain some guy is selling today actually.

well if they cut your chain, you just show them who's boss and go right out and buy a new one, and put it back in the same location! :D
|
I think i'm just going to carry a blowtorch in my sac and weld my damn bike to the street sign every night.
|
i think i'll just take my bike inside every night so no one steals it.

I left a Kyptonite chain/American Lock around a lightpost one night during last year's Autumn Attack in Prospect Park...I returned to find it gone the following morning. I assumed that it was my tax dollars at work (keeping the park all beautiful, or whatever).

exactly, it sucks it's expensive. but atleast it wasn't your bike.

Going to say it again: those American Locks are NOT SECURE. You can cut them with big bolt cutters, or at least that's what it looks like once the job is done. You are much better off with the Kyrpotonite or OnGuard locks. Since the chains are way harder to ID than a bike and go for $40 I wouldn't be surprised if their are theives who prefer to take the chains...
