3 leading/3 trailing on a fixed rear wheel?
In the near future I will be getting a new wheelset for a new project. Am I asking for trouble if I do a 3 leading/3 trailing spoke pattern on a Formula hub?
I tried searching, but didn't find much on this specifically. Thanks |
I've done it, front and rear. Front held up just fine. Broke four spokes on the rear. I can't tell you if that's because of the lacing pattern, or if that's because I'm a ****ty wheelbuilder. The pattern is basically 3x arranged slightly differently, so I've heard that in theory it should be just as strong. My newer set of wheels is 3x in the rear and holding up beautifully, if that makes any difference to you.

I wouldn't say you're asking for trouble. I recently built a pair of wheels with a 3L3T pattern with formula hubs. I will say that they were a ***** to tension and true, but once they got to where they needed to be they were stiff as anything. Be sure you pay attention to the interlacing, it's a little bit more tricky than with a 3X wheel.

I ran 3l3t front and rear on a pair of 26" wheels I made, made a 3l3t rear for a friend, and yesterday made one with a coaster brake hub. I haven't had any problems with the pattern, and I think it's both cooler looking and easier to lace than normal 3x.

cooler looking, yes. easier to lace, no.

Oh, he's right. I'll do what juvi did and put one of these on the back of my rig. http://www.mrtoys.com/big-wheels/pic...l-Tricycle.jpg

I've had no problems with my 3l3t wheel and tons of problems with a standard 2-cross, different rims, so take it for what it's worth. http://static.flickr.com/41/97676425_48427a5ee1_b.jpg |

PS those wheels are the worst! I've been riding these joints again because it's the only wheelset I have that isn't broken right now. deepV+phils suffered major rim damage riding over a steel toe-clip at 1am, openPro+dura-ace are way out of true from me riding them so much, need to so some maintenance... |
It's a pain in the ass to replace broken spokes on L/T patterns.
That said, I'm all for spoke flare. m. |
I've been building and riding 3L3F wheels for FG bikes for years with ZERO problems (front and back).
My wheels look pimp and stay true. Anyone that has had problems may need a block of instruction on wheelbuilding. I say go for it, unless you want to listen to Juvi. But if that's the case you're already lost. |
