NYC for the weekend!

Paul and Pista and I are going up to Manhattan this Sunday and Monday. We were there last year and went to a raw vegan place which was pretty interesting, but if anyone has any favorite bars or veggie restaurants to send us to, we would appreciate it. We will be in the madison square park vicinity, but we are willing to hop on the subway (no bikes unfortunately) for a good spot. Thanks guys and gals!

kates is diner food, red bamboo is carribean soul food, gobo is asian fusion. everything i listed is all vegetarian.

you can pick up the vegetarian guide to NYC at most book stores and they'll have tons of awesome stuff listed as well.

i ate at caravan once and thought it was groooooooss.

but it reminds me, Counter is right across the street and is delicious, especially for sunday brunch. 1st and 8th or so.

Old Devil Moon is also key for brunch for large portions of delicious tofu scrambles.

i've never been to Pure but a friend used to "cook" there and said it was pretty good.

the owner of quintessence, the other big raw place in NYC, got busted for jerking off on the subway. some girl took a pic of him with her camera phone.

Caravan of Dreams is fairly good but I don't think it justified the prices. There's also Angelica's Kitchen in the east village which is a favorite of mine but is often crowded.

Also check out Vegetarian Dim Sum house down on Pell street in chinatown. There's also House Of Vegetarian on Mott(?) which is ok but I prefer Vege Dim Sum.

If you skip over to Williamsburg, AVOID BLISS. Its fairly bland crap. There's Foodswings which is vegan fast food (oh yes, it is fast food) and The Lucky Cat has vege pizzas (one of the owners is vegan) if you're out drinking and need to put something on your stomach.

If you've got a bit of cash to spare, Candle 79 on the upper east side.
A little snooty for my tastes, and def. more expensive than I usually go for, but its... just... damn!

Any recommendations on what to eat at Candle 79? They're only a couple blocks from me. I wonder if they deliver?

They've changed around the menu a little bit since the last time I was there, they only use seasonal ingredients, I think, but what I had was seitan on mashed potatoes with some sort of balsamic reduction and some greens. Again, damn. My wifey had risotto. I'm guessing she'd give it a damn as well.

The polenta fries were also dope. And the Whales tale pale ale is good, despite the cartoony name. man I gotta get back to NY soon.

It's a pretty upscale place, so I don't think they deliver, but it is NYC, so...

I didn't know that veggie korean food existed. It has always seemed pretty heavy on the meat for me, and I'm not a veggie (but my partner is).

foodswings is highly overrated and a bit overpriced but nice to have around.

angelika might be good if they seasoned their food

candle 79 is awesome.

It hasn't been mentioned yet I personally love the Madras Cafe for good vegetarian/vegan Indian food. It is located on 2nd Ave between 4th & 5th St.
