my tube exploded

i put a tube& tire on my rim, i went to inflat it and while i was pumping air, it went KA-BOOM! I now know the importance of rim tape. :(

onetwentyeight 09-05-06 12:25 PM

I dont understand why people even try to get away without using rim tape. Its so cheap and prevents flats. what's not to love?

xthugmurderx 09-05-06 12:30 PM

who said he didn't use rim tape? i'm more inclined to say he/she just didn't have the tube all the way in tire somwhere

onetwentyeight 09-05-06 12:31 PM

id guess its a pinch flat too, but he seemed to be implying he wasnt using rim tape.

prodigal son 09-05-06 12:34 PM

"I now know the importance of rim tape." This seems to imply no rim tape was used.

xthugmurderx 09-05-06 12:41 PM

oh. DERP!. i'm ********. yeah. i shouldn't have defended you, op. you're stupid. RIM TAPE!!! (sorry 128)

onetwentyeight 09-05-06 12:47 PM

haha

Sounds like the tire/tube weren't seated quite right, and as you inflated, the tube popped the bead of the tire over the rim and it blew out. I've done it a few times, most recently while trying to change a flat on my girlfriend's father's old road bike that does NOT have hook-type rims.

Learn_not2burn 09-05-06 02:39 PM

I had a similar situation lately, except it was that the tire was defective on the bead. Blew two 7 buck tubes (extra long stems) trying to get the stupid thing on.

sers 09-05-06 02:49 PM

yeah, a gunshot sound is typical of the bead not being seated correctly at one point.

what sucks is when it wakes you and your roommates out of a dead sleep.

I once locked my bike outside somewhere, got drunk, returned to bike at 2 AM so as to ride to some party across town. found that I had two flat tires, walked bike 9 blocks home, and attempted to patch the flats. Patched both tubes, tried to pump one of them up, BANG. "What? tire looked like it was seated." patch tube a second time, pump it up, BANG. hmm. move on to other tire, try to pump it up, BANG. I am bewildered until I try to repatch and pump the tube yet again, and actually see the knife hole in the tire expanding as I pump, and can see the tube sticking out of it. although I can't pull the pump off the valve in time to let the air out of the tube. BANG. needless to say my roommates were not stoked. lesson learned: don't lock up your bike on the path between the frats and the campus bars at night, in fact do not lock your bike up at night period.

yeah you can really never learn stuff like this just without trying it first hand.

na975 09-05-06 09:50 PM

it cost me a tube, no biggie!

prodigal son 09-06-06 10:40 AM

Icould have happened while riding though and that would be bad. I guess this is Darwinism in action.

Actually its alot more likely that improperly mounting your tire cost you a tube. The lack of rimtape would have more likely caused a flat in after a few miles of riding.
