obligatory first day messengering post
 

so apparently, I got a job yesterday. I went down for what I thought was an interview, and the dude sent me right out the door on my first pickup. whoa. I don't really have anything philosophical to say about the whole thing, but right now I'm just happy to have work, etc. any advice for a rookie? like, when do you find time to eat or take a leak if you're always hustling? and how the *** am I supposed to deal with those copy boxes?

who are you working for? put the boxes in your bag or on your bars. pee when you walk past a bathroom in a building. or go to barnes and noble or trader joes...you'll figure it out. eat on the bike. it's great...and never...NEVER go to the cira center, and if you do, call 20 minutes of wait, no matter what. that building isn't worth standing. learn city hall. if you can get in and out of there fast and do the job right the first time, you win. be nice and try not to smell bad.

being nice is the hard part, at least here with all of the demeaning crap that messengers (and freight guys, and UPS/DHL people) have to put up with.

Keep your metal crap in your bag if you have to do a lot of government building runs. Those five minutes each run really add up.

Put some money aside for when you get hurt. See if you can pick up an el cheapo med plan anywhere.

a friend got banned from a building here in boston he smelled so bad. they called the company.

that wasn't a certain dreadmulletted friend of ours was it? he's always smelled peachy, but I got a whiff of his bag once and whoooooo!
