win a rabbit 09-07-06 09:14 PM

doesnt that only apply if i found it in my attic or behind the wallboard of my new civil war era home

genericbikedude 09-07-06 09:33 PM

the assclown who is selling the item mixed up the words "accept" and "except." dumbass. plus, I think that its rather obnoxious that s/he is onloy selling to people with lots of feedback. wtf? only spendy materialistic twats get to buy (admittedly useless) stuff. perhaps I have a point, perhaps I need to go to bed.

sloppy robot 09-07-06 09:38 PM

those wheels are the ****! whats the strength of a wood rim? is that thing one curb away from splintering?

el twe 09-07-06 09:44 PM

Please don't ride those on the street.

sers 09-07-06 09:44 PM

not as much as me, even though we both have to be vigilantly maintained and oiled

Ceya 09-07-06 09:58 PM

Wooden rims are hard to find. Yes you must maintain them also. How much are they worth , me personally ...$400.00 for wheelset. depending on how much is true in his ad.

You must look very carefully when buying wooden rims. make sure nothing is wrong.

I had a set and sold them. rims only , I just couldn't see myself destroying them.

A pair of NOS Cerchio Ghisallo rims sold on eBay for $228.50 in April. Here's a LINK to the auction.

Here are some Ghisallo rims on a 1941 Schwinn Paramount track bike.

Also retains the right to end the auction at his "digression". I guess if he moves on to other things, the auction will end.

pointing out grammar and spelling issues by calling someone an "assclown", pretty ironic

Ceya 09-07-06 10:42 PM

Remember it is an auction ,it doesn't represent the market.

thanks for the info, it gives me a little more perspective. i would also never dream of riding these on the street. in fact the main reason i asked for more info on how much they were worth was because i will prob never ride them at all and really cant afford to spend tons of money on something that just looks really cool (even though i have been working my ass off and saving for stuff like this).

Ceya 09-07-06 10:47 PM

I again sold mine not because of riding on the street once an awile but I was going to messenger on them.

A fool and his money...

Serendipper 09-07-06 11:22 PM

I think they are beautiful....

A work of fine craftmanship. They would be fun for a Sunday ride in the park on a fall day.

Please enlighten me. When a commodity is rare, supply is limited and value is based on demand. An eBay auction provides wide exposure for the commodity and prospective buyers are the market. The rims are worth $228.50 by definition.

Ceya 09-08-06 10:39 AM

It can blow prices beyond what they are supposed to be or under value some items also.

Collectors who servie a certain market know what a item maybe worth. I will judge ertain things from people who know and not what the highest bidder wants.

That is why I have yet sold anything on Ebay. Yes I know there are collectors on ebay the pushes the prices up. True, but that is not my game.

There were serveral Gianni Motta trackframeset and a bike the same as mine. Stars and Stripes.

one went for around $400, another went for $260 a whole bike went for $960 fullSuper Reord Pantagraph grouppo(pristine condition)

Is that what they are worth, NO! those who know what they are now they got them cheap.

I have seen IRO go for some wild prices but is that the market?

This may be a bit of a detour on defining value, however...

I worked for quite a while for a fellow who did estate appraisals, with a focus on older furniture, fine art, and antiques. He had 2 main ways of defining value. One is the fair market value, and one is the insurance replacement value. The insurance replacement value is obvious, so I wont get into that, however the fair market value is relevant here.

Anyway heres what wikipedia has to say about fair market value: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_market_value

There are a few key phrases to note:

"The fair market value is the price at which the property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or to sell and both having reasonable knowledge of relevant facts."

"# A knowledgeable and willing buyer unencumbered by undue pressure to buy and acting in his own best interest
# A reasonable time for exposure in a free and open market"

I dont think ebay fits these definitions, and for those reasons I wouldn't use the ebay market value when determining value in an appraisal. Christies, yes. Sothebys, yes, Bonhams and Butterfields, yes. ebay no. It is over priced for somethings and under priced for others. You would get a better idea of the true value if you averaged the max bids. Its a cumplusive buying market.

That all said and done (bored yet? i sure was at that job), I was watching these and was thinking i'd pay up to 350 or so, but I have a feeling they will go for more, especially now that you started this thread. Thanks.

rocks in head 09-08-06 11:01 AM

it's worth what you can get for it. end of story. If you're buying and think it's too expensive, it's overvalued. If you get it for what you think is cheap, it's undervalued.

haha everybody has a different opinion. but generally market value is the average of recent sales have been. I'm no economist, but it seems pretty simple.

sloppy robot 09-08-06 11:13 AM

anybody read freakonomics? pretty interesting and it pertains to all this

the thing to think about with ebay.. is if its listed incorrectly .. then it cant really be used to judge its value

the value of anything is what a buyer is willing to pay... nothing has an inherent value...

ebay is a weird jumble of different brackets...
there are the rare highly prized and visible items like wooden wheelsets or ancient campy parts and these often end up at ridiculous prices only the chosen few can afford; prices that are probably higher than you would pay in a person to person transaction (if you could ever locate a seller)

then there are the used, nos, aand recently classic parts that most people can afford to buy and ride... if you were to walk into a shop or meet someone that happened to have a nice campy super record headset in stock, they'd probably start the asking at more than the same item would eventually go for on ebay, but it's nice to be able to inspect the goods and not deal with shipping...

the best deals are the ones that fall below the radar.. parts jumbles or complete bikes often come in at bargain prices.. for some reason the sum of a bike's individual parts is worth more than the whole bike.. even wheelsets often go for far less than the hubs themselves would sell for on ebay

i sell on ebay because otherwise i wouldn't have anyone to sell to... i don't have to hang onto parts until someone interested pops up; i can just list them when i want or need to... and i can cruise around locally and pick stuff up and sell off the parts i won't use...
i just sold a garbage picked sturmey-archer dynohub set (that my friend rode til he crashed the wheel) for over a hundred bux.. who da hell would've bought that from me locally ? nobody, which unfortunartely is why it was in the garbage in the first place!
