the extending front brake thing!!!!
I just got the front brake on my bike so that it fits with a 700 wheel!!!!!
I have seen pics of setups on here to make this work, but I got some long reach brakes from nashbar and thought they would work. well, they didn't reach. whiz on them, anyway, by cutting off the part of the old schwinn approved brake where the pad can be slid up and down, and using that to extend the distance from where the brake is supposed to bolt on the bottom of the steerer tube just that little bit worked great!!!!!!!!!!11 and the part of the old brake is pretty stiff and strong. cant find my camera download wire to show pics, but the setup looks super clean and sturdy. I rode brakeless for a while, but the first day I did, in the morning w/out coffee yet, I rode down some stairs trying to remember the bike path. I usually take the road, but brakelesss seemed too risky!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I would like to see the pics if you get a chance. I'm building up my fixie and the rear I know will be to long and I'll need to extend the hole down about a cm. I was thinking of cutting a piece out of an old hinge. Can't get more sturdier than that. Anyone else got pics or ideas?

Sheldon Brown's Drop Bolt Extra long reach 48-64mm |
And since when was wikipedia a valid source for anything?
At any rate, tektro makes long reach calipers, 47-57mm. If those aren't long enough, sheldon browns got some longer ones, but crappier versions of tektros. |
are you takling about filing out the bottom portion of the slots where the brake pads go?
|
Look at the ****n picture
LBS will not help you here, not in this country of lawyers |

now i understand! op was unintelligible. picture explained all. you cut off the slotted part of the caliper and use it as a drop bolt.

if you study the original post it seems the poster is speaking of a solution that has already been implemented. |

You want to get in with the Cranky and Vintage boys. I have like 9 gazillion sets of calipers that reach 64-75mm. I can't sell the things at all, because there's just so many of them. They're not as good as modern double pivot brakes, but I'd trust them a LOT more than a drop bolt made out of the cheese you found in the bottom of the fridge.
