Bike Horns???
OK so I hit my 3rd pedestrian in like 2 months while messeging, I'm finally sick of ******* in NY darting across the street without looking. I finally gave in and bought one of those police horns for my bike even though I never liked them. I cant believe how great this thing is. My biggest thing was approaching an interesction, especially in midtown where everyone just rushes across the streets to beat the lights. its awsome in traffic, cuts through all th noise and gets the attention of those morons on the big rigs. I already avoided several close calls. Just thought i'd sing the praises of this thing since NYC has had so many bad bike accidents this summer and this could seriously save a few cyclists from alot of hurt.

do you use air zounds? could the trigger be mounted on the end of a bullhorn?
|
i bought a bell because of this problem but that isht doesn't work. crowds of people walk against the red because they don't see any cars. i just keep riding and ringing the bell till they jump out of the way at the last minute. i know one day i'm gonna nail someone.

I couldn't find anything googling Megazorn..
Got a link? |
Nothing is better then your own voice, just ride a fast as possible and when you approach a stop light just keep yelling " No ****ing Brakes, AHHHHHHHHHH". it works i promise.
|
My voice works great, but I find that I yell things like "move you ****ing yuppie ******bag." A horn is probably better.

Got a link? oh, no it's called Megalert |
I've got a squeeze-horn, designed for a kid's bike, that some teens from the youth group at my church bought for me because they know I don't have a car. It's labeled "for ages 3-5" and "adult assembly required." Nevertheless, I was able to install it on my handlebars and it's very effective for warning pedestrians, much moreso than a bell in my experience and usage. Plus, the pedestrians think it sounds really funny, so they're not annoyed that I'm basically telling them to get out of my way... It's comparably effective to yelling, but people take it better. Probably wouldn't work in NYC noise, though.

I ditched my horn because of how long it took me to get to it. A nice GET THE FU(K OUT OF THE WAY is easy enough. |
yelling does no good in NY, it's so damn loud on the streets no one hears you! That megahorn is actually really good. Ear piercingly loud. its the same one the police use
|
I tied a whistle to my bag.
Old school. Cheap. It works. |
Bells are worthless here, since all of those damn pedicabs use bells to signal for fares... people don't even look when there's a bell sound now. Damnit.

visitordesign, I know you know this b/c I think you mentioned it in a thread way back when, but the whistle is "illegal" in NYC. I was thinking about how antiquated that law/rule is. Seriously, when was the last time anybody heard a cop using a whistle to stop someone. Maybe traffic cops, but I have not seen that in a long time. I think the only people I see regularly using whistles these days are the doormen trying to flag cabs for tennants/patrons.
I hear that westminster whistle is one heck of a whistle. I may get one b/c my bell is useless. |
Dont like the wistle because you have to keep it on your mouth at all times, or take your hands off your bars to grab the wistle, by then i would have already plowed into someone!

Here's a link to the Megalert on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...OA3DA?v=glance
Looks like you can strap it to your top tube and, if you don't mind doing some soldering, lengthen the cable so that you can place the trigger wherever you want on your bars. Roachtrap, how long would you say the stock cable is? |
I have a pretty powerful whistle built right into my lips and tongue. Gets the job done for cars in many cases.
|
I like the airzound, no batty's. But the handlebar mount sucks.

No problem if you know how to use a soldering iron. i tried that air zounds thing and i dont like it cause you have to have a bottle mount, the megalert is nice and compact. As far as whistles go, I really like the Storm whistle, super FUKIN LOUD!, twice as loud as the referee whistles., if you liike the whistle instead i'd go with that one, i like the trigger thing though so I use the Megaalert instead.

I usually carry a javeline. After you skewer the first pedestrian the rest move. Anyways...people don't actually walk around here. Soccer moms drive two blocks to visit friends, it's pathetic. The only bad times come on campus when a ton of classes let out at once. What's it like having to deal with massive amounts of pedestrians at once? Ever try a flare gun as a joke? And since the popularity of the ipod has gone up do people even notice you when you scream anymore? Last time I was in NY everyone walked around in a white headphone daze.

You can mount the speaker in any direction you want.I had it on my topbar pointing up, but since I'm always gettin on and off my bike I rigged it to my bag strap. Works nice. |
