Ate asphalt hard...something strange going on???
 

While powering through a light this morning I ate $hit. But something isn't right. I was just powering through when it seemed like my rear wheel lost traction and then locked up. While my head was traveling towards the asphalt it went through my mind that I threw a chain. It sure seemed like I threw a chain. But as I collected myself and came to my feet I realized the chain was still connected and tension was right about perfect. What the fu¢k?
I was going perfectly straight on a flat road with a good road surface. A trip back to the seen shows no signs of oil, leaves, plastic or anything else that would have led me to lose traction. It was a dry day no water on the road.
My bike set-up is a Peugeot team (reynolds 531) convert with Miche hubs, 18t rear, 52 tooth front mounted to an Apex 5 RG crank. The bike has Armadillo tires. The chain line is really good.
The bike seems ok, I just needed to straighten and re-tighten my stem and re-tape my bars.

So what the fu¢k happened? Any ideas?

chain skip seems unlikeluy but possible. How did you put the chain on?

Your rear cog may have slipped.

just a guess here, but maybe your lockring is loose, and you had previously loosened the cog while skidding or resisting to slow down, then when you stomped on it to make the light the cog spun forward a bit causing your feet to slip for a sec?

Try tightening the gog down HARD with a chainwhip, then use a good lockring tool (pliers are best) o see if you can get the lockring tighter. If the lockring moves it was loose.

uh oh...miche hubs...i'll share with you one of my experiences along the same lines.
When I was still living in philly, I was going at a pretty good clip up 13th st towards race (turning right on race toward 6th) I turned to corner, still pretty much flying...and i hit the ground...(little difference, but here's the important part) i hit the ground on my right pocket (u lock pocket, at the time) slid LITERALLY 30 feet down race, over to the far curb. I stopped right before the curb and went "SAFE" (with the correct baseball umpire arm movement) there was a lady cop standing back at the corner...she asked if i was ok and said there was nothing in the road..

I determined the culprit to be my cones...The ones on my hub. I always had one hell of a time keeping them tight on my miche hubs. I don't see why that should affect you going in a straight line, but if you were rocking your bike, i could see it. I'd check 'em. Also, you didn't catch your seat on your ass did you?

It's definitely the Miche hubs. I also know of someone getting ruined on them in the same manner.

Doesn't really appear that the cog slipped. I have the Miche carrier and it was drenched in locktight prior to assembly. Plus it has a bunch of road grime all along the crevice between the lockring and the carrier that would have showed signs of slippage.

I actually also hit the ground on my right pocket (where I keep my keys which were smashed into my leg) and I also had a lady ask me if I was ok seconds post crash (not a cop); and while I was rocking my bike a bit, I don't think cones is the issue. I have the newer Miche hubs with the sealed bearings, that couldn't happen with sealed bearings....could it? And no I didn't catch my seat on my ass.

What exactly happened to the guy you know who got ruined on the Miche hubs?

try taking your cog off and seeing if there is any damage to the splines.

Good call. The hubs do have some miles on them. I will take a gander this evening when I get home.

I was thinking more on the lines of wheel slipped in dropouts but the same chain tension thing kind of negates that.

I actually just broke my lockring tool (wierd) so it looks like i won't be taking anything apart till tomorrow.
(Note: my "lockring tool" was actually a very old KTM factory tool kit [aluminum] suspension adjuster, and while it has served me well in the past I am not really surprised it broke)

at least you are invincible and not hurt. no real advice but the cog is where i would start.

like everyone else, id say look at the cog. that description in the first post sounds a lot like a cog issue.

Your damned right. Hit asphalt at no less than 20 and got up like Marciano. Was more worried about the bike really than myself:)
