tonight's dilemma: removing a cog
lock ring came off no problem, but this cog is not going ****ing anywhere. ive got a chain whip, nothing. i tried the whole reverse rotafix thing, nothing.
i swear, this thing is held on with cement or something.
just to make sure i'm not totally ********, cog unthreads to the left, correct? is there some secret here?

lockring unthreads to the right.
It's reverse threaded - lefty-tighty, righty-loosey.
But if it came off no problem, then I don't get your question.

You're right about the threading. Do you know if any thread sealer was used when the cog was installed?
EDIT: Sorry, i misread. the lock ring unthreads to the right, but I think you meant to ask about the cog since thats whats giving you problems.

yeah, i meant cog, not lock ring.
there seems to be some sort of white grease in the threads of the cog, but it doesnt look like loctite or anything. its a mercier, so lord only knows what they did to it.
with the rotafix (that doesn't sound like the proper tense of the word, but whatever) i was seriously pulling so hard on the wheel, im afraid the chain itself might snap, or the wheel will explode or god only knows what. i just know that the cog doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Okay, yes.
Cog unthreads to the left.
If rotafix isn't working, then try some wd40 or penetrating oil and let it soak for a bit. Then try rotafix again.

Are you POSITIVE you are doing the rotafix correctly?
It can be a little confusing determining whether or not you're tightening or loosening a cog.

i'm even listening to marilyn manson in an effort to scare it off the hub. nothing.
i think i may have to switch to something a little harder. new mastodon perhaps.

i'm not positive of anything, except that marilyn manson is way more annoying than he is scary.
bike is flipped upside down, chain is wrapped around cog, wheel is turning to the left (towards the front wheel).

If the wheel is spinning to the left (counter-clockwise), then the cog is actually being spun to the right.
Spin the rear wheel away from the front wheel (clockwise).
Someone please doublecheck me here. Visualizing this is difficult without a bike in front of me.

spray some wd40 and let it sit. Take a malet and bang the face of the cog to get the wd40 to penetrate. if you can try using a pipe on your chaing whip to get a little more leverage

I doubt a pipe w/chainwhip will not get your more leverage than the rotafix.

he is talking about a stuck COG. Reverse rotafix didn't do anything???
I freed up a stuck cog once by standing on the padals (lockring removed) and jamming down on the pedal REALLY HARD. Had a friend hold the bike balanced for me. Just stomp on that ****. Backwards, of course.
I really don't know if this method is advisable (for those with more experience) but it did work. There could be a chance of stripping the hub, I imagine.
I have also heard of people using wood blocks and a large bench vice. Cog teeth stuck into wood blocks, clamp into vice and turn wheel. Make sure you turn the wheel in the right direction (lefty loosey, but when upside down in a vice turn opposite direction).

You'd want the wheel spinning towards the front wheel, like you were pedaling forwards. So I agree with Hyper Revue, I think.

no wd40. ive got some chain lube and some dishsoap. neither are going to cut it i dont think.
turning wheel to the left also turns the cog to the left, because they're attached. it should be breaking it lose, but it's not budging.

I can't explain this in writing, but just try spinning the wheel the other direction.
When you spin the wheel to the left, the chain is pulling the cog to the right.

i dont know if it was turning the wheel in the proper direction (thank you hyper revue) or the thunderous power of mastodon, but the ****ing thing is off.
thank you all for your help and support.

Check this out -- try this technique.
https://204.73.203.34/fisso/eng/schpignone.htm
However, something you might want to try instead:
1. Put your back wheel against a corner where two walls come together.
2. Mount to bike wtih the lock ring removed.
3. Start pushing backwards. It may take a LOT of force!!
4. You'll know when the cog comes loose.
Turn the bike around and do the same when tightening.
Note that the white stuff you see might be anti-seize grease. I'd suggest putting some back on.
My cog, by my estimation, on a factory built 2006 Rush Hour was tightened to about 210ft lbs.
